youve got a air lock.drain your systen and refill at the radiator with the plug on thermostat housing open. you MUST have the expansion tank cap on while you fill the rad. fail to do it this way you will air lock. once rad and stat are full fit plugs, then top up expansion tank 1/2 full

its air locked. drain cooling stysem, refil at the radiator .leave the expansion cover top on while through this process . once rad is ful, remove plug from thermostat housing an top up. close both plugs on rad and thermostat housing then open expansion tank an fill 1/2 full. problem solved

gases in the expansion tank overflowing the water, had same problem. for mine was head gasket

Had the same problem with my defender 300tdi. turned out to be the imobilizer. new battery fitted in the fob .problem solved

Try removing the drive belt ,and run the engine ,this will rule out Alternator ,water pump and belt tension idler and pulleys . It will help narrow the problem down.
