I should mention that my VM Engine is the later 2.5 Turbo version and I am looking for the same.

2.4 VM, is it that bad

My VM has run for 203,000 miles and is still going strong. It rattles and below 200rpm the power is crap but it has outlasted many a TDi and TD5. If anyone out there want to scarp a VM them let me know as it would come in handy for spares. Thanks Mike

Location of Oil Pressure switch on 2.5 Turbo Diesel Engine

Thanks for your help Mathew and I have found the switch but in a different place to what is shown in your diagram. The switch on my engine is located on slightly above and to the rear of the starter motor. In fact its very close to the flywheel housing and I am not sure if it can be removed that...

Location of Oil Pressure switch on 2.5 Turbo Diesel Engine

Does anyone know the location of the oil pressure switch on a VM 2.5 Tubo diesel engine. The workshop manual seems to suggest it is inside the engine  . I can't see it on the outside but then I could be looking in the wrong place. Why am I looking.... the oil light stays on and it...

    Rangie Mis-behaving

Hi Big Al, glad to hear it is fixed but sad to hear you were muged on the way. What happened to the good old days when the mot was "No fix no fee". When I started out in electronics my old govenor used to make me stick with a fault until it was found and then replace the part responsible not the...

    Changing the transfer box

The guy that is going to change mine says he is going to run the back wheels onto a pair of car ramps to gain extra space under the vehicle. I'll find out this week if it works. We are changing the complete transfer box

    Auto or Manual

I forgot to reply to the original question - I prefer the manual diesel

    Auto or Manual

The P38 is longer than the classic and some buffs say that a 108" wheelbase is 8" too long for offroad work. One chap I know cuts the standard RR chassis down to 88" - needless to say the RR body does not fit afterwards so he converts it to a bobtail. I own a classic myself but love the sleeker...

    Help!!

Thanks for the reply. The Viscous coupling can only be stripped and repaired by specialists like Ashcroft Transmisions Legs advise that the unit be replaced. The rest of the transfer box seems fine. Breaker prices seem to be very high when compared to a rebuilt unit. PLease...

    Help!!

I need to replace the viscous coupling in a Borg Warner Transfer Box for my 1990 2.5 Turbo D Range Rover. The box has a chain drive and the current viscous coupling has siezed. I know I can get a new coupling for just under £300 but would like to save money by buying a good secondhand unit...

    Starting problem

It would be great if that's all it is. Obviously you will have to get one with enough capacity as RR engines need quite a lot of power to turn them over. My VM has two batteries so I hope they never fail. Happy New year Mike

    Front Diff and Viscous coupling

Hi folks, a week before Christmas my 1990 RR Classic (2.5VM diesel) started to make a loud banging noise as I drove along. Having limped home I found that the visous coupling has seized and had smashed several teeth from the crown wheel of the front diff. The axle has been repaired and I am...

    Starting problem

Sounds nasty to me. In the past I have learned that lound clunks can be expensive so suggest you get it checked out before you drive any further. The following may help:- 1) Check the leads to the battery and starter motor. the terminals should be clean, smeared with petrolium jelly...

classic - engine swop to diesel

In my view the dealer has increased the value by fitting a 300 tdi engine. The only snag being that your insurance company may demand an engineers report to say that the modifications comply with the manufacturers specifications and that the vehicle is safe.

    VM advice please!!

I own an RR fitted with a VM 2.5 turbo and from my experience the engine is likely to be the last of your problems as I have found mine to be very reliable, others may not agree with this of course. It does not have the pulling power of the 300Tdi, especially below 2000 rpm when the turbo...

    Changing the transfer box

It looks as though the viscous coupling has gone  on my 1990 RR Classic , powered by a VM 2.5 turbo runing on vege oil. Some suggest that all one needs to do is to relplace the viscous coupling while others say that is the viscous coupling has gone then it would be better to replace the...

    Problem with flashing high beam

I had the same problem with my 1990 RR and had to replace the complete stalk. See if you can get one on E-Bay as I think the cost of a new one is rather high.

    '92 Range Rover Diesel

I have a VM engined RR (1990) and its fine but the majority of people say the Tdi is better, especially the 300 Tdi. They had one drawback for me though and it this they both use computerised engine management systems. My VM 2.5 turbo loves the vegetable oil I use to run it on. Hos does 50p per...

    Rangie Mis-behaving

Hi, I am not an expert but I wonder if it could be the ECU or associated components. From what you say it sounds as though the engine starts to warm up and then closes down because the ECU is discovering a fault with one of the sensors or controlers. The fact it will not start while semi warm...
