Auto or Manual

I'm after a diesle range rover. I don't want to pay the earth around 5k - should I go for manual or auto. It will be used on road 70% off road 40%

I would go manual every time, especially for a diesel, and particularly if you are using off-road. Plus you will get at least 10% better MPG.

Don't get me wrong, I love the V8 auto's, but the diesels in auto form (personally) I don't think are that great. Modern (as in the last 2/3 years) diesels work ok with an auto box, but not older ones.

Firstly i would say i would have a manual one though but if you can try the diesel in both auto and manual guises then you can have a think about it

I have owned a manual since April (having owned an auto classic prior to that) and am very impressed. In fact when towing my caravan I much prefer it, it is certainly better in the fuel consumption stakes.

what one have you decided on then????

I have decided on a manual......I have never really enjoyed auto's unless the car was fairly high cc, but I never driven one off road, hence the query. As for the 4x4 I would prefer an older pre-P38 rangeee - its just finding one. The reason why I'd like an earlier one is the P38 although a nicer looking - cosmetically they seem more vunerable.

The P38 is longer than the classic and some buffs say that a 108" wheelbase is 8" too long for offroad work. One chap I know cuts the standard RR chassis down to 88" - needless to say the RR body does not fit afterwards so he converts it to a bobtail. I own a classic myself but love the sleeker look of the later models so come on chaps & lassies how good are the post classic (P38 on)models off road?
