I would check your PCV valve isn't stuck, it should be open at low loads & close off when the induction pressure exceeds the crankcase pressure, if its stuck closed you will have problems at idle / low loads, if its stuck open you will have problems when the boost pressure increases. Also check...

It actually cools the fuel being returned to the tank from the injection pump, not sure what the temperature rating is for the Freelanders plastic fuel tank

No its designed around the Warrior winch, the only other short drum winch I know of weighs about 13 Kilos more than the warrior, believe me it is very important to keep to the weight down when its this far forward of the front axle line & above the hub centres. Its a Freelander not a Defender lol

Not my specialist subject but is it possible you've bent the valves if you tried starting it with valve timing so far out, that might be whats making the noise not the starter motor
