Hi all.
I recently bought a 2005 Td4 auto.
Went on a 1200km trip and found fluid dripping down at garage to fill. First thought it was Diesel and took it back to mechanic.

After 3 days he discovers its transmission fluid, and not diesel, coming out of the breather on top of the gearbox

The vehicle didn't do this before . .
1 Was the transmission over filled by previous owner and only became a problem when I took the long road and got a bit hotter than usual?
2 Is there something wrong with the transmission?

Please give advise before the mechanic do something as he doesn't really know LR's?
 
Best to take it to a Freelander specialist if at all possible.

Failing that get the mechanic to look at Rave and on here. This site is a mine of information.

There is a breather on near side of engine bay on top of gearbox. It is a short 90degree bent pipe just beside the ECU. I extended it for deep water wading.

That's the place the oil was coming out. He drained the gearbox and refilled it with the correct amount and extended the breather, with a rubber pipe about 30cm.
Still waiting to get my car back as they also replaced the cv's and something went wrong when he test drove it. Eish!
 
If auto oil is coming out of the top of the auto's breather pipe then stop driving it. That pipe should be left to vent to open air, and not connected to anything. raising the pipe won't harm it. The engine should be running at a certain temp when checking the auto oil level. If yer mechanic doesn't know this then don't let him touch it. It's always a warning sign when they don't have a manual or you have to get them one. Far too many people let garages mess about with jatco's when they don't know what to do with them. Some say it's just an auto. Far too many horror stories of those who find out the hard way.

plus one, totally agree with what you've said

have learnt alot and also done my own autobox now, used an infrared temperature gauge, one i useto use in my heating days , takes a little while to do

think like a lot of us hippo owners read where garages have overloaded auto boxes by 1 or 2 litres etc

but thanks to u for writing such extensive write ups in how to do these correctly

since doing mine the gear jumping has gone and touch wood is nice and smooth, am on nearly 180,000 miles and far as i know on original ird, gearbox and engine
 
Okey. Some feedback . . .

The CV's is in and should be fixed - I'm saying should be as the mech did 'something' and doesn't engage Reverse & the TC light comes on!
He took the vehicle to a LR independent yesterday and they still couldn't fix it.
Today the vehicle is going to a LR dealership as they have all the computers and stuff.

In the meantime I'm stuck with a crappy Fiat Punto :(

Hoping to get some positive results today.
 
Okey some more feedback.

The dealer confirmed that some of the 'belts' inside the gearbox is burned and needs to be replaced - that is why the oil was coming out of the breather.

Box is being redone and should be fixed by Monday

hi

it sounds like he has taken out the wrong plug on ur gearbox, there is a warning that if the wrong plug is taken out the gearbox has to come out and stripped

plus put a pic up for u of the breather pipe

hope u get on ok and they haven't screwed ur box up, hopefully some of the more experianced guys will be able confirm this regarding the plug and about the belts as i dont know enough if belts can cause overflowing out of the breather pipe

I also suspect that he took out the wrong nut when draining the box - but he/the tool boy will never admit it.

What really confuses me is why would the oil come out of the breather if no oil was added before to cause an over fill? (As I would have seen that it is leaking after a 100km drive.)
And the oil spillage caused the belt to be damaged

What else can cause the oil to come out?
 
I can only think that it has been over filled for it to come out of the breather?

Unlike other autos that may have a dipstick and checked cold..

The Jacto box has to be tested at a certain temperature and filled/topped up while at this temp, ideally. ...

The box was likely filled by a moron, then with the heat of driving, the excess was pushed out of the breather.
Now another moron has undone the reverse brake band fixing bolt instead of the level plug. Thus the box now needs a full rebuild. I expect you will have to stump up the cash to fix something that didn't need fixing. With the Jatco, you can either read up all about it and do it yourself or take it so someone who knows what they are doing with them.
