    arrrgh these brakes

Am having a problem or two with my brakes at the moment. Mechanically they are sound but the pedal is at the bottom of its range. even when adjusted so they bind the pedal travel is excessive. the master cylinder is not leaking neither are any of the wheel cylinders. Whilst i hate the...

    Lightweight tyre upgrade

Hi All, Looking for some advice as i will be replacing the tyres on my lightweight at the end of the month. Need something good in mud and quiet on tarmac, more agressive tread than a straight MT and preferably the tallest tyre i can fit. Have measured the vehicle and it looks like 33...

    axle under spring?

Has anyone done the axle under spring mod? May sound like a daft idea but have been looking at fitting large tyres for playing off road, done a deal for some 37 inch rubber and would love to use em on the lightweight, eccept there aint enough clearance, however if the axle was under the spring...

whats the best defender engine ? poll

Love my gmc 6.5 turbo, for shear brute force, and like 300 tdi's as they are more refined than 200 tdi's

    big tyres? more i know...sorry

Spacers don't knacker your bearings, generaly lack of maintenance and abuse knackers your bearings, and 265 75 16's will fit without spacers but you lose some of the steering lock, hence their fitment is mainly to fit wider tyres and keep full steering lock unafected

    disco to defender R380

It would be easier, i agree, but as the 300 tdi and r380 stand me at £150 the idea is to do it low cost if poss as the 110 it's going into already has an lt77. Hopefuly it will end up traybacked as a weekend play toy, and with the prospect of totally mashing it off road, spending more than is...

    gearbox

there is no simple answer to this question, but much depnds on your experience with spanners, the problem is two fold, if you don't have the tools then you probably aint got the experience to decide whats shot and whats not, also when you open up a gearbox you can be opening a can of worms and...

    battery guage

it's not that simple. the guage isn't calibrated and if you swapped for another guage it would probably not read exactly the same. Best way to prove it's ok is get a meter and check that the battery voltage is ok and see what the meter says, then if the reading drops you know you have a problem

    Points problem

are the parts genuine lucas or cheap copies? I replaced the whole ignition system inc dizzy not long ago with cheap bits, the faults i had were a crap condenser, crap coil, the points had resistance to one of the contact pads. Like most things in life you gets what you pays for.

i have a discreet winch tray from a disco 2, it's kicking around in the garage, am in manchester. got rid of the disco cos when even the aircon is run by a computer it's just way too much technology, now drive a lightweight with a 300 tdi and the only electronics in my lanny is the mobile phone...

To overhaul or not to overhaul

food for thought but an EGR valve dont use or have oil in it, it is operated by vacuum and opens a valve to pass exhaust gas, so this could not be the source of engine oil which killed the alternator

Snorkel Air Cleaner, which is which?

the way an oil bath air filter works, is by first drawing air through the oil bath, in which any large particles settle to the bottom of the oil, from there the air bubbles through the oil and takes some oil with it into the metal mesh filter section wetting the mesh as it does which enables the...

    disco to defender R380

Has any one any experience of converting a disco R380 to be used in a defender? I looked at the workshop manual and the section of the gear box for a defender r308 looks almost identical to an lt77, where as the back end of the disco box under the selector housing looks some what differant. can...

    salisbury axle problems

sounds to me like it's simply because your prop shaft angle is too steep, the nose on a salisbury is longer than on a rover axle hence the need for a shorter prop shaft. As for phasing the prop UJs out by 45 degrees, this only applies to axles whos drive flange points to the gearbox output...

    My F'in brakes

if the pedal moves after being pumped up it sounds like the master cylinder seals are leaking and requires either a strip down and new seals or a new cylinder, as a further check if the seals have gone the brake fluid usually turns a dark / and or black colour, which is evidence of the seals...
