    Head gasket failure

Feel for you as we were in same position 3 months ago. In end took less than I would like in px but thought of having hg go and being left with immobile car of little value other than to someone prepared to do fix, convinced me to get shot quick. Despite all the other problems we had with it we...

    Head gasket failure

I'm no mechanic (as will become obvious) but when mayo began appearing in engine oil cap and what I can best describe as gloopy grey/brown gunk appearing in coolant and inside expansion bottle, took it to trusted mechanic who did coolant flush and filled up with fresh antifreeze. Few days later...

    Head gasket failure

Previous HG failures (including myself!) have reported gunk in coolant and mayo in oil prior to fix or catastrophic failure. Mine ran with above symptons for 4 weeks before px'ing in much hurry and relief.

No suprise at 12 mpg for short trip. Bout same as wife used to get going about 5miles to work up and down single track roads. One of many, many reasons she now drives a diesel Gran Vitara:D

    sunroof problem

Had same problem before we got shot of Freelander. If most likely slider/runners buggered (search should find many others with problem and fiddly fixes) also risk it may get stuck and can't close properly. Unless any warranty involved may be best to shut properly and take out fuse to stop...

Goodbye and Good Luck (especially to 1.8 owners)

As I said, expected incoming fire:D . From my experience I would say to all new owners of elderly (shall we say) Flealanders (hopefully newer ones are better) your experience will be a little less painless if you: don't use electric rear window (for fear of it getting stuck either in up or...

Goodbye and Good Luck (especially to 1.8 owners)

Before both barrels start getting fired I should remind everyone that the Flndr was the wife's and we have gone for full hairdresser upgrade and got an 04 Grand Vitara (incoming fire expected!). Meanwhile I'll keep driving my ever so dull but comfy and reliable Omega. Will keep looking in now...

After 2 years of anxious ownership finally px'd the 1.8 FLndr today. Loved the car :) but hated the cost and silly reliablility issues:mad: . Big thank you to all the guys who have given advice with various problems and concerns over the last couple of years.:)

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

Local LR garage reckon they have not seen any HG problems coming back since they started fitting the new MLS gasket, but business brisk with repeat offenders who have had replacements prior to 2006. So will probably take the plunge and get it done.

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

Bugger  diagnosed by garage as HG starting to go. Stuffed now as no one with access to t'internet and anyone with any common will likely buy it. Trying to decide whether it worth getting repair done to make it easier to sell?

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

You go up hills in a Flndr? Are you quite mad?:D Given the prices indicated looks like Xmas is going to be cancelled

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

Well everything crossed today please as I have not been able to figure out where our coolant is going to. Increased amount of gunky spots in expansion tank though. Wifee taking it to local independant LR dealer today for diagnosis. Suspect I'll be taking her home though! How much is fair price...

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

Its her birthday soon so a torch will kill 2 birds as they say:D Anyway I'm applying a strict policy of no further investment in the FLNDr unless absolutely necessary.

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

New expansion cap seems to have done trick for now, but wife under constant reminder to check coolant level before she goes anywhere in car. Reminds me that now clocks have gone back I'll need to buy her a torch to check level on her her journey home from work:D

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

£4.11 at local mainstealer which isn't too bad for a LR part. Anyway now know that rubber seal on previous cap is about 1/4 of depth of knew one so will see what happens. Noticed last night that the circular plastic label which sits on top of expansion tank looks flaky/corroded. Hoping that...

Can't see any obvious leak from expansion cap but will try your tip with the bag, thanks. Pressure test at garage will be next on list. Anyone any ebay/online tips for where to quickly get new expansion cap as I may as well change it, just in case.

    Trying to diagnose coolant problem

Well tried to diagnose this at weekend and now I'm left thinking possible HGasket problem. (this motor had new hg& cylinder head at 30k, new engine at 60k, new hg at 90k, when we bought it on basis it could surely not go wrong again!) Its done 16k since last HG failure and the engine change was...
