local stealers - cheap as chips.

£4.11 at local mainstealer which isn't too bad for a LR part. Anyway now know that rubber seal on previous cap is about 1/4 of depth of knew one so will see what happens. Noticed last night that the circular plastic label which sits on top of expansion tank looks flaky/corroded. Hoping that this maybe because of occasional steam leaks from previous cap. Anyway here's hoping ! Thanks again for all tips.

My 1.8 had a gradual loss of coolant. It passed a pressure test at a dealers but, surprise, the only thing that cured it for about 30,000m was a new head gasket and head skim. And now its started again.A service manager at LR dealers suggested using radiator sealant. Said he'd put it in his wifes freelander and it's worked. But then it may not have beem HGF. Sorry.

New expansion cap seems to have done trick for now, but wife under constant reminder to check coolant level before she goes anywhere in car. Reminds me that now clocks have gone back I'll need to buy her a torch to check level on her her journey home from work:D

could be a pin hole in rad, you most probl wont see it if its that small, try some rad seal , cheaper than going to dealers

and a saucer of milk for the cat

Well everything crossed today please as I have not been able to figure out where our coolant is going to. Increased amount of gunky spots in expansion tank though. Wifee taking it to local independant LR dealer today for diagnosis. Suspect I'll be taking her home though! How much is fair price for HG replacement beaing in mind is hasn't completely gone yet, so hopefully no need to skim etc cylinder head etc?:(

Anything from £300 back street garages to £1200 in the dealers

Log on MG-Rover.org in the local area section someone might point you in the direction of decent garage in your area

I paid just under £600 at a LR dealer. Mine was only a slow leak but needeed the head skimmed ; this was around £40. The chances are the head will need a skim as this is more than likely the cause. There would appear to now be a number of modified head gaskets around that have been developed by engineers as opposed to the LR un-designed original. Have a look on ebay, there are one or two reputable suppliers. You will need a thickness that corresponds to the ammount skimmed. Discuss with your repairer, don't necessarily accept the standard gasket suggested.
Following replacement always stop the car for a rest half way up any steep hills for it to cool down......repeat as neccessary until you buy a better car :(

Not all heads will need skimmed, the gasket you are referring to is the Multi Layer steel MLS gasket. The LR dealers should be fitting this as standard now
