gstuart No, it's not the fuses and while I haven't been trying to do so to solve this problem, it's quite possible to open the tailgate with the engine running - but not when it is in gear.

Just to close this off in case in might be useful to anyone else. The European halogen lights arrived today. I unplugged the UK xenon's, plugged in the halogen's and hey presto..everything works. No rewiring needed. So the halogen's will get me the CT and afterwards, I can pop the flat-beam...
