    1986 110 -- rear/end door lock

Thanks. I’d say it’s more of a single THUNK than a click (or two clicks) but I will check again.

New knocking noise on 1986 110

My 1986 110 has lots of noises but there is a new one that sounds worrying. I’d call it knocking but some people might say clonking. I’m pretty sure it’s NOT the engine. I can’t figure out where it’s coming from but it’s linked to road speed not engine speed. At 30mph with the clutch in, it’s...

    1986 110 -- rear/end door lock

Thanks. Sorry for the slow reply — I’ve been away. I think it’s latching properly. There’s a flat plate that springs up when you close the door. It’s going all the way up. And lifting the door handle retracts the plate and resets the trigger. The problem is that turning the lock doesn’t stop...

    1986 110 -- rear/end door lock

Thanks. Sorry for the slow reply — I’ve been away. The striker is in the pic below. The current lock doesn’t have the crescent shaped part that’s on the new ones. It’s like a flat spring loaded plate that flies up from the bottom when the striker goes into place. Lifting the outside door...

    1986 110 -- rear/end door lock

Hi. My rear/end door doesn't lock. It latches OK but the little sliding 'snib' thing that should stop the handle moving doesn't do its job. If you apply enough force to the handle then you can still open it even when it's supposed to be locked. This is on a 1986 110. I ordered what I thought...

    Dipstick tube

Thanks. That’s very reassuring! I just had a fiddle about with the nut but I can’t get close enough to tighten it. I tried my long tap spanner but it’s not the right tool. Any tips for getting in there to reach the nut? Maybe I have to bite the bullet and disconnect some of the turbo pipework.

    Dipstick tube

Thanks for replying. Yes — my tube is different, there’s no bracket. And I think there’s a very gungy looking nut at the bottom to lock it in place. It’s a 200Tdi, not the original engine. Here’s a couple of pics of it in the ‘in’ and ‘out’ positions. I’m not sure whether the clean metal shows...

    Dipstick tube

Checking the oil on my 110 (1986) today, I noticed that the dipstick outer tube is moving up and down when I pull/push the dipstick. I don’t think it’s supposed to do that! There’s shiny metal visible on the outside where it used to be inside the engine. Now I don’t know whether the oil level...

    Hello from Cambridgeshire

Thanks. Uncanny how accurately you’ve captured my family in that picture! We just need to get a dog now.

    Hello from Cambridgeshire

Thanks. This is the 3rd engine, as far as the previous owner knows. It's a 200 Tdi. Older son is 14 and for his D of E bronze skill is learning to dismantle + rebuild an Austin 7 engine so he will soon be significantly more qualified than me to work on it himself. I'm quite good at taking...

    Hello from Cambridgeshire

Hello. Why am I here? When I got home from work the other day my son said "we should buy a Land Rover". I'm not entirely sure why I agreed with him, but it seemed like a good idea, and we now have a 1986 110 CSW on the drive. It's happened rather more quickly than I expected but based on my...

    Rear side door lock buttons

I had a look inside. On the right there was a rod with a threaded end dangling down inside the door. I fished it out and poked it through the fabric and screwed the Cortina button on and now it works. So I can lock and unlock the right door. On the left I wasn’t so lucky. The dangling rod...

    Rear side door lock buttons

Yes, here’s a pic. Maybe if I buy a Cortina it will come with the Defender door lock parts?

    Rear side door lock buttons

Thanks. They probably looked like that in 1986 but I think quite a bit has been changed since then. At the moment there is nothing there -- just a blank area of the door card with the covering material stretched over it. It feels like there's a hole for a button instead of a big plastic slider...

    Rear side door lock buttons

I've rummaged in the box of parts and found these metal rods. But all of them are different. I think the one on the right is part 24 from this diagram. The other two look like they're supposed to have a lock button screwed onto the end. But if that's the case then I'd expect them to be a...

    Rear side door lock buttons

Yep. There's already a hidden kill switch and a basic steering wheel lock. So that's a start. I've got a motorbike anchor on the front of my house but if I chain it to that I will probably forget and pull the wall down!

    Rear side door lock buttons

That's great -- thank you. I spent ages searching for diagrams but didn't find that site.

    Rear side door lock buttons

Brilliant, thanks. The whole area where the buttons are supposed to come out has been covered over with leather/vinyl so I will have to poke something through and see what's inside. I take your point about not removing the door card if possible but I have a hunch taking them off might be easier...

    Rear side door lock buttons

Hi, everyone. This is my first post as the new owner of a 110 CSW. I realised after getting home last night that there's no way to lock the rear side doors. The button (or whatever you call the thing you push/pull to engage the lock) is missing. The box of bits that came with the car apparently...
