    sediment bowl? filter?

Don't understand why they fit them on Discos and not defenders. Always struck me as a good idea but then I'm used to boats. Incidentally, you can replace the stupid plastic drain screw with a metal one. Try Spares And Accessories

    Disco 1 - Fuel Consumption Help !!

How much have you allowed for the tyres? My D2 was giving me about 24mpg on some Maxxis AT's (can't remember the exact size). Swapped them for a set of Pirelli Scorpion 235 70 16's and the consumption immediately went to 29mpg. Can make a hell of a difference.

    Engine temperature info required

With the probable exception of modern ecm controlled engines (where the gauges are driven by the senders but through the ecm so the ecm tells the gauge what to read) all senders tend to work over a standard resistance range and the gauges are matched to them. There are 2 different sets of...

heater plugs - one is oily?

No, it doesn't go into an oil gallery. If it looks oily it usually means it wasn't working.

    mpg is it correct

My manual was doing 24-25 mpg with Maxxis AT tyres (can't remember the size) on a mix of motorway and town driving. Changed to Pirelli Scorpion 235/70/16 (think thats right) and it went to 28-29 mpg. As above, autos are more thirsty but it's worth looking at the tyres. Also, I would be very...

How to stop the crankshaft pulley spinning?

If the nuts that tight I would of thought the starter probably wouldn't undo it. One small point. Are you sure the starter is going to turn the right way to undo the nut and not tighten it up?

    Help with cold starting

Its not cold enough for diesel to gel yet. Even in Yorkshire. I would check the glow plugs are actually working. Put a meter on the glow plug terminals and earth and make sure you're getting voltage to them when you turn the ignition on.

A Couple of Disco 2 woes, Heated Screen, temp gauge, judder...

Second that. The BCU needs to be told the electric screen is fitted. Has it ever worked or have you just tried to upgrade the car? The temperature gauge is also controlled through the BCU (I think its the BCU or one of the modules) so its possible it might be a fault common to both problems...

Sonar? May well be a stupid question...

Standard marine depth sounders/fish finders don't usually register much below 0.5m and I certainly wouldn't rely on them to be accurate to better than 0.5m. they also transmit in a fairly narrow cone so at shallow depths, you are only going to see what is directly below the transducer. You'll...

    Radiator top hose bleed screw

Self amalgamating tape over the whole hose/bleed screw arrangement or if you can get the old bleed screw out then its a standard metric thread. I think M5 or M6. Get a machine screw with the right thread and put an o ring under the head. Did the same on mine when I lost the screw in the engine bay.

Check the fuse box under the dash (drivers side) for water damage. Very common problem. Water gets in to the circuit board on the back of the fuse box.

    Air suspension faults

Just invested in a Lynx diagnostic system. Apart from the manual not giving the correct info to get it installed properly, it seems to do the job. Connected to the D2 to get rid of the 3 amigos after changing the worn out hub. that bits OK. It also informed me of a series of faults with the...

Discovery TD5 wont crank all the time

If you got it off in 10 minutes, you're a better man than I. The top nut is an absolute sod. Mind you, once its loose if youre lucky, you can wind it off with your fingertips. I found you can just about get it back on and started with your fingers. Don't think I'd leave it off though. Thats...

    Ignition switch

Tried cleaning up the earths and eventually got underneath and jumped the +ve direct onto the lucar connector. Same click so it must be the solenoid. I've ordered a solenoid repair kit. Should solve the problem.
