    SWB brakes - master cylinder?

Hi, can I just get confirmation that I’m likely right that the master cylinder is to blame for struggling to get them bled? ‘72 SWB 10” all round, so one slave per wheel. Single line, no servo. ive done the following - new slave cylinders all round. - new flexis - no visible leaks from...

    2.25 Petrol odd timing

Ok, seems there’s two timing marker combos. Multiple point, pointer. One mark on pulley. Single pointer, scale of marks on pulley. white marker is on scale, but engine runs best with the single mark at 6’ BTDC. I’ll check TDC per single line with the position of the piston and rockers...

    2.25 Petrol odd timing

The white line is the middle of 5 lines on the pulley... but yes, there’s a line I hadn’t seen. Why would there be a pointer with multiple points and multiple lines on the pulley? Maybe the line at 6’ BTDC has been added to make it correct?

    2.25 Petrol odd timing

Hi, the proper timing marking is the white line... although looking now there’s a line on the pulley seemingly suggesting about 6’ BTDC. I need to double check TDC I think. Could the pulley be wrong/ from another engine?

    2.25 Petrol odd timing

Hi, So, fitted electronic ignition today, new leads, coil and plugs. Went really well, and the engine started first time after fitting. Runs very nicely. so, once warmed up, decided to check the timing using a strobe. I’d adjusted the dizzy by ear first and adjusted them idle. Then removed...

    Oil leak - easy fix?

Can’t find the screws in stock anywhere. Anyone know what size self tappers are needed? I assume they screw into the rivet holes that are left? Otherwise they’ll leak? Or will some gasket sealant go behind the mud guard retainer thing. also, can someone definitively confirm a 41mm socket or...

    AVM hub screws

Thanks for the replies. Service kit seems like a good idea maybe. How do I know if they need the servicing? They work, so I guess sourcing the bolts is cheaper option.

    AVM hub screws

Does anyone know where in the UK spare screws can be found for AVM free wheeling hubs? Like these, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180768209729 Got quite a few missing... Cheers

    Oil leak - easy fix?

I’ve a leak coming from the crank pulley seal. is it as easy as it looks to sort, assuming the nut comes off? Is it just slide the pulley out and hook out the seal and pop a new one in? The kit seems to come with some L shaped bits... of cork? cheers

    Brake adjusters

Ah, I see. That makes sense... thanks

    Brake adjusters

Thanks both. What needed to be ground? what I’ve noticed on the front ones, after fitting new shoes and drums, is that they’re very tight even with the adjuster backed right off. Can a little be taken off the shoe lug that fits into the cylinder to give a little?

    Brake adjusters

How have people got on with the replacement brake adjusters, supplied by Paddocks in my case? I have fitted one side without problem. The other side went wrong in that the splines spin inside the hole, thus rendering it useless. Now sorted with another, but I can see the splines stripping in...

    Zenith carb question

Hi, update. had a mess about in a spare hour this morning. Replaced choke cable and now opens the flap fully. New filter, and leaned the mixture screw somewhat. Turned about five turns in, then backed off a couple of turns. started and settled the idle once warmed up and choke off. Seems a...

    Zenith carb question

Hi, yes, additive in fuel, but can’t be sure previous owner was. Haven’t took mixture screw out yet. Apparently it has been rebuilt. I’ll fiddle over the weekend. Going to check everything. One concern is the excess oil in sump. That can’t be good. Hope it’s just oil. I’ll report back...

    Zenith carb question

Thanks. The choke cable is pretty tight, and generally ineffective. I have bought a new one but haven’t changed it yet. Haven’t touched anything on the engine yet as I was just pondering what to start on. Col, you’re right, it’s pretty filthy in the photos there. I’m thinking that I need to...

    Zenith carb question

Hi, had my 72 SWB 2.25 Petrol for a week or so now. Not been able to go out in it yet as the brakes were non existent, but now they’re sorted I’ve move to trying to work out why it’s running rich, and sooty. Below is a photo of the carb. Does anyone know if the choke/strangler flap should be...

    Hello, again

Yes, indeed. Appearances are deceptive though , and for what I paid I was hoping it was a bit “tidier”. I’ve jumped from fully restoring rotten minis, so was looking for an easy one. Bought it blind, and it arrived with no brake pedal.... but that’s sorted after correcting shoe springs...

    Hello, again

Hi, thought I’d introduce myself again as it’s been a while. I joined as I owned 3 freelanders over the past few years, and still have one. However, I have just bought a new project, a ‘72 series 3 SWB. I’ll have quite a few questions I’m sure, but I’ll make sure I search for previous threads...
