    Front Disc brakes question

I change my front discs and pads last month. Quite easy but a couple of things to watch for / make life easier. 1). It would have been easier to have a tool to push the pistons back into the caliper together. I used a "G" clamp and a strip of aluminium to squeeze them back at the same time...

To overhaul or not to overhaul

Judging by the fact your are quoting repair costs in Rands, you must be in South Africa. Where abouts? I would definately get a second opinion. Try British 4x4 in Pretoria, I've found them to be very helpful.

    TD5 Cruise Control

Hi all, I retro-fitted cruise control to my 2000my TD5 a little while ago. I noticed recently that sometimes when i disengage it with the res button and then re-engage, nothing happens. Even if I try to use the set button, nothing happens. It's as if it is switched off. It only works again after...

Whats the life expectancy of a Disco 300 TDI engine? (94/95 model)

sorry, forgot to mention it, but my colleague at work has a 300tdi with 155,000km on the clock. He was thinking about overhaul time until our local independant showed him cars with + 400,000km and still not needing overhaul. Goes to show with regular maintainance they can go forever. And thats...

Whats the life expectancy of a Disco 300 TDI engine? (94/95 model)

My TD5 Auto has 187,000 on the clock. Had to replace the head gasket at 185,000 but that was due to overheating caused by a leaking radiator which I though had been fixed. I took out a 2yr insurance warranty when I bought it and they paid the major portion of the H/Gasket repair, so well worth...

    Disco TD5 Gearbox Sounds????

My TD5, 2000MY Auto has 187,000km on the clock and the gear box is just fine. Sometimes get a slight clonk when I lift off the gas quickly but otherwise ok. Also I've noticed that the convertor takes a while longer to lock up now the colder weather is here but it's not a major concern. For the...

    Gurgling sound

Update. Gurgling sound through the heater matrix was because she was losing coolant through the head gasket. see my thread on difficult to turnover. New head gasket and hopefully all will be well. Would recommend British 4x4 for those living in the Pretoria area.

    Difficult to turn over

Phew, got the car back today and it was only the head gasket which had failed. Luckily no damage to the head. No idea why it had failed other than when I bought the car it had a radiator leak (which was fixed) but it did red line once on the temp gauge. That was in November and when the rad was...

Help! Locked out of '99 Disco TD5

Not much help I know but I had a similar problem in that my remote batteries packed up (on all three keys at once). however, I could unlock the car and open the door but the alarm kept going off. The emergency key code is to disable the alarm. I also struggled with the code as you lose a bit of...

    Difficult to turn over

Hi Guys, Quick update. Changed the starter motor but still displays the same problem. It's like the engine gets jammed when she tries to turn over. Took it to my local independant and he diagnosed head gasket failure. The water will sit on top of a piston and then a hydraulicing effect takes...

    Gurgling sound

Hi all, TD5 Auto. I had a coolant pipe replaced and now when I start up I can hear a gurgling sound in the cab. Sounds a bit like water runing through a pipe and I have to top up the coolant a bit. Would it be that when the pipe was replaced an air lock has occured and I need to bleed the system...

    Difficult to turn over

had the battery tested yesterday. No problems. could it be that the starter motor is going to give me problems?

    Difficult to turn over

Hi all, Any ideas please. Yesterday my TD5 auto did not want to turn over when starting. I turned the key and the engine turned once and then stopped. Felt as though the starter moter couldn't turn the lump over. It usually starts first turn. Tried it a couple of times before she fired. Drove...

    Turbo heat shield

Hi all, When I bought my TD5, the bolt holding the heat shield to the turbo had sheared resulting in the shield resting on the waste gate actuator. I fabricated a bracket coming off the mounting point on the coolant pipe which has worked quite well. Unfortunately over time this bracket has now...

    Lazy Central Locking

Hi All, Just noticed that my offside rear door is getting lazy with the unlocking. I sometimes have to use the remote twice for it to fully unlock i.e 1 blip for the drivers door, 2nd blip to unlock remaining doors (offside rear door button goes half way up), 3rd blip to fully unlock the door...

Fitting cruise control to Disco TD5 2002

I fiited Cruise to my 2000 TD5. 2nd hand switches cost R285 (£19) and they threw in the strg whl cowl as well! Really easy to do taking under 1hr including the wait for the A/Bag, just plug in and go. What a pleasure when driving on the freeways!!

What do you get on a full tank ??

Funny, but I remember growing up in the UK and this is precisely the way I was taught to drive......mind you my father was test engineer / vehicle proving for Triumph at the time. (many a time spent with him in prototype Stags, TR7's etc)

    100k Discos

I tend to agree with Steve. The O.E.M's invest a lot of money in engine development achieving a tune which will satisfy both all the markets the vehl will be sold in and achieving longevity with reliability..........sometimes it doesn't work though!! If you need to go down the re-mapping and...

What do you get on a full tank ??

My TD5 auto returns 10.33 km/L since I got rid of the EGR. Based on a 95 litre tank, that works out at about 600+ miles. Steady driving with a light right foot, using cruise as much as possbile. I live 46km from work and the route changes from the highway to through town on some days.

    100k Discos

My 00my TD5 has done 178,000km and so far no real problems to speak of. I bought it with a full L/R service history for what thats worth and I worked on the basis that most of the major failures would have been sorted out and the risk would be wear and tear from now on in. That's gonna be a risk...
