Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

Well .... I did as you said. The earth terminal connection and the main 12v connection to the starter looked all good but I removed them and cleaned them as you said. The little spade connector to the starter was mucky as hell and loose. So I cleaned that and closed it a little so it is...

Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

I got the car back last night from the garage. I parked it at the top of a steep bank ( not a problem here as we live on top of a very large hill ). This morning I tried starting it again but it was still just turning over very slowly and would not start. I tried using a jump lead from...

Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

Cheers for this ... Here's an extra bit of info which makes me cringe now you've said that, especially as it's cost me 100 quid today for that garage to fit 3 glowplugs ( which didn't need doing ) and he's screwed the 4th plug up. The car started to struggle starting a week or so ago when...

Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

Many thanks It looks like the order I'm best doing this is sorting the starting out first and worry about the broken heater plug after the MOT on Jan 02. New starter motors on E b ay are coming up at 75 quid. Are they any good as a local auto electrical place says it will recon my start...

Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

He'd phoned and said that he didn't really know why it was so sluggish to start. He said that it may be the starter motor but he had tested the heater plugs and two were not working. So he phoned to say that he would put a set of plugs in. He then phoned back and said that one had snapped and he...

Sweeeeeeeeeet Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooord He has just phoned me back again and said that he can't get the heater plug out and he has to take the cylinder head off to take the cylinder head to a local 'specialist' so they can get it out. Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

It's been a bad week. A week or so ago I posted saying that the 300tdi 'M' reg had overheated. I'd topped up with antifreeze and bled the coolant system and all seemed well. The heater was running warm again and the coolant levels were holding steady. However ... it's been so...

No heater and engine overheated ... please help!

Viscuous hub bearing? ( is that the servo pulley below the water pump ? I've checked that and it also seems ok ). Belt tensioner seems fine ( I did the screwdriver extra pressure and the noise is still there so I don't think the penny will help ... I think the noise is defo the pump )...

No heater and engine overheated ... please help!

Cheers guys I took the belt off and turned the water pump pulley by hand. There didn't seem any excessive play and as I turned it through 360 degrees it seemed smooth enough with no gritty or resistant points. I put the belt back on and squirted it with WD40 and it didn't stop the squeeking...

No heater and engine overheated ... please help!

Ok here's an update ... I followed the advice and ... First thing this morning I took expansion cap off and there was a slight hiss but no explosion. I took the two plugs off the rad and the stat and left the expansion tank top off. The water was well down at both the rad and stat...

No heater and engine overheated ... please help!

Many thanks guys. I'll follow advice. Re the 1p thing. I don't know whether the squeeking will be the belt. When I had the car in August it made a hell of a noise. At that time I took the belt off and turned all the pulleys to see if any of those felt gritty or made a noise. They didn't...

No heater and engine overheated ... please help!

I've been driving it for the last 2 hours on and off. I drained a couple litres of water out and topped up with antifreeze ( in case the guy that did the head gasket in summer didn't put anti freeze in ... or enough ... I'd had to fill up expansion tank with some plain water anyway so I thought...

Guys forgive my ignorance ... I will learn. Thanks for all the replies so far. What else I've learned in the last hour ... When I went to the car with the car not started ... there was hissing coming from the expansion filler cap. Not sure if that's right but letting you know. Water in...

No heater and engine overheated ... please help!

Coolant I presume? I can't see any burst pipes. It was just hissing and bubbling out of expansion tank lid when temp gauge went very high. It also looked a mucky brown colour. I just topped up with half a pint as it was such a small amount. Colin
