How did you get it all out in the end Pete?

yeah the heaters are nice and toasty - 1st time thats happened as well! Before the new head gasket the heaters only ever blew luke warm.

Ive run it to temp Gav,it was running for about 15 minutes with the cap off. I did read somewhere that it can take up to an hour (maybe even longer) to get all the air out; is this right? How do you get all the air out of your system?

Cheers for that wil2813. Ive just been out to have a look at it again; should the system be pressured? I let it run for a few minutes to warm up (about a quarter on the temp gauge) took the cap off and it started to chuck water out - is this normal? Ill defo get the rad off and have a look, does...

I took the pipe off that feeds from the top of the radiator back to the expansion tank to check the pressure that that was flowing well, I asumed that because it was all OK there that the pump would be fine; would flushing the radiator out maybe help?

Just got the heads back on and its cured my starting problem as it fires up in the button - BUT it still overheats :confused: took it for a drive down the road and within half a mile it was overheating again.... does anyone have any other suggestions that I can try before taking a match to it?

I never trust the MPG on the trip, but I think 23mpg around town is pretty good, I get about 11-12mpg around town from my 4.0 - well when its running anyway:p

Cheers irish and 71, a few days off fitting them yet but once I hear back about my heads I want to crack on.

So can I just use any steel bolts? (obviously that are the right size and length) Would you use washers? Maybe those self locking ones?

I've taken the heads to Turner Engineering in Surrey this morning (really helpful guys if anyones looking for a head skimmed or engine). They had a quick look over them and from what he could see the head gaskets were fine and the heads dont looked to have been leaking, however when he measured...

Thanks P38 and irish, ill give them a miss then and get some ordered from my local stealer. Yeah the head bolts were a nice suprise in many respects as after reading some peoples experiences on here I was dreading shearing a bolt or rounding a head off! Thanks again for all the advice :)

All the spark plugs looked just sooty and pretty knackered! I was told that the heads had been dont just before I bought it (about 3000 miles ago) but as there was no receipt I took it with a pinch of salt. Having seen the head gasket maybe they were telling the truth! Hope the other head...

Could someone please tell me if these bolts Range Land Rover V8 P5B P6 Stainless Exhaust Bolt Kit on eBay (end time 03-Mar-10 18:46:13 GMT) would be a suitable replacement for my exhaust manifold bolts - mine look like they have seen better days! My RR is a P38 4.0. Many thanks.

Yeah the head looks pretty much the same, again a bit oily and sooty but nothing that seems out of place. One thing I did notice is that the head bolts were very loose, I would say that they were slightly tighter than finger tight! I never noticed any water leaking throught the gasket and given...

The initial problem was loss of water coolant, overheating after 15mins of driving which all lead to a burst water pipe. Following the burst water pipe, it was very difficult to start and sounded like it was only running on 7 cylinders

Having removed the right hand head today I have uploaded some photos of the head, gasket and block - just wondered if someone could give me their thoughts on the condition of them. The head gasket isnt broken and looked like new! Many thanks in advance!

What did you use for a bung? Would liquid metal do? Or would it be better with something already solid? Many thanks for all your help so far Gav!:)

I did notice that the intake manifold(?) the very top of the engine where the 4.0 is (please excuse my lack of knowing the right part names!) has a small hole in it at the top just below the 4.0, theres a thinner piece of metal thats blown through - would this need replacing? I can upload a...
