Just got the heads back on and its cured my starting problem as it fires up in the button - BUT

it still overheats  took it for a drive down the road and within half a mile it was overheating again....

does anyone have any other suggestions that I can try before taking a match to it?

water pump ok?

coolant flow???

I took the pipe off that feeds from the top of the radiator back to the expansion tank to check the pressure that that was flowing well, I asumed that because it was all OK there that the pump would be fine; would flushing the radiator out maybe help?

stands a good chance its a partially blocked radiator mate, ive had a fair few p38s and this has happened on a couple of them.the water flow seems good but...well you cant see inside the rad can you.have the flow of your rad tested.DONT buy a secondhand one it could be as bad if not worse even if it looks really good condition.ive tried pressure washing them out in the past and it was a waste of time, its a small price to pay considering the damage it can do, get i checked mate its not a big job to remove its really straight forward

Cheers for that wil2813. Ive just been out to have a look at it again; should the system be pressured? I let it run for a few minutes to warm up (about a quarter on the temp gauge) took the cap off and it started to chuck water out - is this normal? Ill defo get the rad off and have a look, does anywhere do a good pattern rad or is it stealer only?

Ive run it to temp Gav,it was running for about 15 minutes with the cap off. I did read somewhere that it can take up to an hour (maybe even longer) to get all the air out; is this right? How do you get all the air out of your system?

make 100% sure you havnt got any airlocks in system fill the header tank really slow whilst running, are the heaters blowing hot ?

yeah the heaters are nice and toasty - 1st time thats happened as well! Before the new head gasket the heaters only ever blew luke warm.

i usually fille the top hose up, i usually get air trapped in the lpg side si i just loosen the highest hose. it seems to clear it!!

Ill try that - my lpg hose comes off a T piece on the header tank and runs behind the engine over to the lpg unit - its about a metre of hose. Maybe thats where the air is hiding!

could be, i also clamp pipes almost closed to help force the water down all the routes not just the easiest ones. be carful tho cos obviously theres a danger to that!!!

borrow or get a lazer thermometer(good bit of kit) or simply do a quick check by holding all the water pipes around engine and rad in turn to see if they are hot.if any are cold its trapped air usually around gas regulater as previously stated but watch them fingers !!!
