    Hi, Thanks all for your suggestions. In the end I resorted to a cold chisel and a lump hammer and the bolt heads popped off like they were shot out of a cannon! More dumm questions from me in the future I fear! Thanks again!

    ill give it a go. My 8mm ring just slips arround so maybe someone has had a go at them before and rounded them off (or maybe they have lost some of the head width due to rust). Ill get a torch on it to warm things up a bit, and I suppose if that fails then cutting off the head would be the last...
