Hi

so far i have changed the front discs and pads, the rear shoes and brake cylinders, 3 x diff mounts (thanks hippo for the guide). So now its time to tackle the creaking rear off side.

There is a 5mm gap between the sub frame mount and the body, so i stuck a bar in the gap and lifted (yes you have guessed it a massive creak).

i removed the rear wheel and then managed to get the sub frame mount bolt out (with a bit of heat and then a cold water spray). I stuck a long thin screwdriver up the hole to push out the inspection blank under the rear seat.

The captive bolt weld had given way so the nut was loose (as expected). I then made the inspection hole under the seat larger with and angle grinder and removed the nut and housing that it is in.

the longitudinal had star cracks from around where the nut was and bits had already dropped out.

the question is : can i weld a plate into place and then tack on the bolt, or do I have to replace the whole longitudial?

does anyone have any pics/guide to assist me, and am i doing the right thing or should i just scrap the whole thing and sit in my garage alone and shed a small tear?

any help would be great.

Thanks
Sailoden

Tack a nut onto a repair plate and weld in place. If the damage was minimal you could have got away with fitting a heavier plate and nut inside the chassis without welding. Weld plate to underside as in pic.

or do you want someone to hold yo hand?

Thanks Chaser, that's just the pic I needed. Now it all makes sense.

I'll make up the plate tomorrow.

If my post don't make sense, (was somewhat inebriated after daughters BBQ party :D) weld a flat repair plate to bottom of chassis as in pic, the plate with the nut is only required if the nut has broke free and goes inside above the spacer tube. :)

Hi

I have slight knocking (from rear diff area) on really really tight slow turns.

1. I have changed all three diff mounts

2. I have 'tippex' tested the VCU

3. I have 'torque' tested the VCU

4. Fitted new Brake shoes, discs, pads, cylinders. pipes and hoses.

5. Fitted alloys and brand new tyres

6. welded the rear cracked sub frame mount (solved creaking chassis issue1)

The only thing things that I can see are :

1. VCU bearings are not 100% rigid in the support bracket (should they be?)

2. Slight leak from Diff oil filler plug (or prop shaft oil seal) - Still trying to work out which (or maybe its just residue after I refilled the diff oil).

The local garage cant figure it out and neither can I.

Any ideas guys & girls?

Thanks in advance

Den
