Series 3 Replaced all the swivels and bearings now the steering is worse a little help please.

I have the same springiness on both sides of full lock, I did find that by slightly over tightening the steering box that the wandering a low speeds got better/more manageable. To counter this I am now going to set the swivels to the max of 10lbs instead of 8lbs. The relay is below spec at 8lbs...

Series 3 Replaced all the swivels and bearings now the steering is worse a little help please.

Swivel pre load set, steering stops set, the toe in only set buy the book as the FWH stopped the local garage from tracking as their machine would not fit. If any one can shed further light on the springy steering at both ends of the lock I would be grateful, I think this might be a big clue as...

Series 3 Replaced all the swivels and bearings now the steering is worse a little help please.

I replaced all of the steering parts, swivels seals bearings and track rod ends/track rods with decent branded parts ( the swivels were used ex army and in good condition along with stub axels). So before all this I had a little wandering but it got better the faster you went. Now however the...

Land Rover series 3 hub seal RTC3511g ( later 80> ) which way round does it go.

Hi, I have just taken the other side off which did have this seal fitted and it does go in as per Pic 2 with the lip sticking up. It looks wrong but it is the right way way to fit it. I think this was causing the confusion. You need to push it on the outer part and it goes down until the top of...

Land Rover series 3 hub seal RTC3511g ( later 80> ) which way round does it go.

Hi, thanks for the reply but still confused as they are both inner springs. In which photo is the face that should be inwards towards the wheel bearings.

Land Rover series 3 hub seal RTC3511g ( later 80> ) which way round does it go.

Can anyone who positively knows please tell me which way round this seal should go. I have now seen too versions so much confusion. The Defenders use this seal and show it fitting with the protruding part facing outwards. This is how some people fit it on the later series 3's but I have also...

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

The Delphi are about 10mm lower in profile. They don't look as chunky as the original that came out. But the big hammer facilitated the removal of the original one so a Lemforder OE replacement would now squeeze back in. I don't do that much mileage with the Land Rover so will stick with the...

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

If you don't have a working Landi and are precious about hitting/bending the inner wing slightly. Get a buddy to tug on the rod at the front end to align the track rod end up nicely whilst you check progress against the inner wing. A thin sheet of ally will protect the paint work.

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

So it turns out you can remove the longitudinal rod without removing the steering box drop arm! Simple, here is how I did it. Step 1) Steering on full lock, drop arm facing forward. You may be lucky and it clears the inner wing, if so pull it out, Job done. if not... Step 2) Beat the inner wing...

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

I do agree that the steering box needs a bit of time and finesse to set up. I adjusted mine and made things worse adding about 3" of extra steering wheel travel, so conversely getting it right can really help which I later did. There is a bit of controversy about the tightness of the adjuster...

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

Hi, thanks for confirming that this is the way to do it. I didn't want to find that there was a work around having paid out for special tools etc. I have a new bar and quality track-rod ends to refit, hopefully they will last for a good few years. This part of the steering system is often...

Thanks for the link to the puller. I think this is the only way forward.

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

Thank you for the advice, I was thinking along similar lines, removing the lower 3 bolts would be easier than trying to pull the drop arm. Also putting the steering on full lock towards the bulkhead pushes the tie-rod end half way past the bracket. Just seems wrong that a serviceable part would...

Steering box longitudinal rod replacement without REMOVING the steering drop arm.

I went to fit a new steering box to relay rod with new ball joints. The problem is that I can't fully remove the ball joint as it is so close the steering box support. So do I have to remove the dreaded steering drop arm to gain the 5 mm I need? As this is a serviceable part it seem crazy to...

Just found a set of whitworths for 11.95, cheaper than the box of eggs I just got from the local corner shop.

Series 3 AF socket set and spanners seems wrong, what should I bought?

Thanks for the input, I will get an old Royal Enfield to go with the socket set. Still a bit confused as to what I need to strip down the swivels to the axle and then back up. The sockets may have been sold as Imperial, which I thought was AF. The bolts aren't metric but seem to fit well in the...

Series 3 AF socket set and spanners seems wrong, what should I bought?

I just getting round to a front end rebuild on my late series 3. So to save time I bought some swivel hubs that came with old bolts. So proudly wielding my shiny new Halfords pro sockets (AF) the swivel pin bolts seemed somewhat loose in them, in fact all the bolts were loose. So switching to an...

Series 3 SPEEDI-SLEEVE what size for late 1984 stub axle?

You are right, it is very important to get the surface as smooth as possible in order to get the best results. The sleeves vary from £15 to about £26.

Series 3 SPEEDI-SLEEVE what size for late 1984 stub axle?

One another forum someone said the early 90/110 does not fit due to the rear flange, but I reckon a angle grinder might pursued it. Again will update if this is so.
