It's to retain the dust/dirt seal. There are 2 seals per piston, 1 is a fluid seal, the other is a dust/dirt seal. It sounds like your calipers need a rebuild. Once the dirt gets behind the first seal (dust/dirt seal) it corrodes the piston and eventually the piston siezes in place.
