Your new tyres should be on the rear and older on the front. This means the VCU isn't working as hard to compensate for the difference in circumference. One caveat is if they are different makes and have difference rolling circ. this may not be the case. Try swapping them and see if any better.

Well I've ordered the ebay bit - seems they sold quite a few. Will let you know how it pans out. Genuine LR parts - about £266 for pulley, bolt and key so feel with worth risk if it doesn't last as long.

I think late 05-06 a best of bunch and should have a lot of the faults corrected that plague early models (IRD ratios etc) and it's a fairly newish car. I'd hope it would be more reliable than a P38!
