    Rear diff 3 litres???

To my knowledge the diff is unchanged from new. It looks very similar to the front diff - no 'extra' welds or anything. I filled it to be level with the filler plug I can't see any pipes that would suggest a lower level.

    Rear diff 3 litres???

I finally got around to replacing the oil in my diffs. Before I started I had a quick check in the Haynes manual and on the forum - 1.6 litres each - so the 4.5 litre bottle should be just dandy. The car was level and I got around 1.6 litres into the front diff as expected but I had to...

Tool set for getting transfer box filler out...

This time, a 5" long 1/2" extension bar worked a treat. I did not need to tap it in place it just went in smoothly! As to why the same bar did not work the last time eludes me. Hey ho!

Tool set for getting transfer box filler out...

You're probably right about the extender - its what I used last time but its all making a mess of the plug and I just want to make it easier next time too... A stumpy little extender should resolve this - though I'm tempted to a new breaker bar with a less fat head - my Sealey one just won't...

Tool set for getting transfer box filler out...

Don't get me started on the plastic diff filler plugs :) I'm going to buy a couple of brass ones - as recommended by urbanpanzer on his website (they're D1 radiator plugs) - to replace the plastic ones I'm going to shred getting off next week :) I've already tried a 21mm spanner and socket...

Tool set for getting transfer box filler out...

I guess I'm just lucky :( There's nothing stopping the 1/2" square going in to full depth. I just can't get a tool in there straight enough to turn it. Thinking about it I reckon I need something like a 3/4" or 1" long 1/2" extender. Perhaps this is what plug sets are for :) I'm going...

Tool set for getting transfer box filler out...

I tried to get the filler plug out of my transfer box to check the oil level. Could I get the thing out? No! The last time I did this I somehow managed to use my 1/2" rocker extender but this time it did not work. My breaker bar won't fit in, nothing I own fits. Is there a...

Downgrading Heated leather seats to cloth...

Belay that! Changing the seats seems simply a matter of unbolting them and swapping them. The forward/backward nature is a part of the frame on to which the seat is bolted. The heaters would need to be taken from the old ones and put in the new ones. All quite straight forward - albeit...

Downgrading Heated leather seats to cloth...

Hi! I have my eye on an ES TD5 but the front leather seats are rather poor. Is it possible (reasonably easy) to swap the seats from my GS into it yet retain the ES heated/electric pleasures? Ie can I just swap the trim over - or do I need to take the manual mechanism too?

Intermittent ACE leak - diagnosis/advice needed...

Thanks There is definitely new oil around the unit under the driver's door. But then there is oil on the underside of the hand brake drum. I can see how oil might get from the handbrake onto the unit but not the other way round. So maybe I'm looking at a ACE leak at the ram like you...

Yeah - I'm wondering that too - I need to go and stick my head under there more carefully

New here, debating coming to the dark side

Fair enough! Don't completely close your eyes to a Disco - perhaps a commercial one with no sunroofs would suit. Whichever you get enjoy!

New here, debating coming to the dark side

Welcome! Why a Defender - would a Discovery be a better step into the Landrover world? (I'm presuming that Jap 4x4s have more creature comforts)

Intermittent ACE leak - diagnosis/advice needed...

My D2 is leaking ACE fluid... The first I knew it was when SWMBO calls me about the yellow warning lights - I tell her to drive home slowly. (I now know this was possibly wrong and could knack the pump, stop the belt turning and satll the engine - but we seem to have got away with it) At...

    Leak identification...

On my TD5 engine there's a ridge just under the oil filter which is caked in grubby dirt. Under that ridge, the dirt is glistening and, further down, a nice drip is forming near the engine drain point. The other side is all clean (perhaps the coolant leak keeps it that way :)) Is there a...

What have you done to your Landie today.

I just cleaned the ace filter unit and the pipes going into it! It turns out the pipes are not thick black and bobbly - they're thin green and smooth!

    2003 GS D2 40k miles - £10k - is this realistic?

Thanks everyone I have slept on this for a few nights but have decided to write this up... If you are planning to buy a landrover, I'd suggest that you avoid these people: Windmill Land Rovers Preston New Road Mellor Blackburn Lancashire BB2 7NT I believe they prey upon less...

    2003 GS D2 40k miles - £10k - is this realistic?

I'm definitely in the market for a D2 - I'm keeping my X reg one :) Good point on the age of parts - everything on this one is going to be 10 years old - and you're right - many of the parts on mine are new :) If only it weren't a million miles away!

    2003 GS D2 40k miles - £10k - is this realistic?

I have my eye on a GS D2 at a garage - its on the forecourt for just under £10k It seems quite well looked after but the price is way above recommended prices for an ES - let alone a GS. But it has less than 40k on the clock. I want a nice D2 - but is this just too expensive regardless?

Thanks for the replies. I'll go see what eBay and amazon have to offer and take a punt. I'll also stock up on the bits:)
