Tool set for getting transfer box filler out...

I tried to get the filler plug out of my transfer box to check the oil level.

Could I get the thing out? No! :mad:

The last time I did this I somehow managed to use my 1/2" rocker extender but this time it did not work. My breaker bar won't fit in, nothing I own fits.

Is there a special tool that fits between the transfer box and the handbrake drum that lets you apply enough pressure?
 
Have you got any mud or crap in the hole preventing it goin in.its 1/2 inch ratchet goes straight in.spray a load or wd40 or get s screwdriver in the hole to clear it out
 
Undid mine today with little to no effort. Just used a 1/2" breaker bar.
Handbrake cable needs moving aside slightly but that's about it. :)
 
I guess I'm just lucky :(

There's nothing stopping the 1/2" square going in to full depth.
I just can't get a tool in there straight enough to turn it.

Thinking about it I reckon I need something like a 3/4" or 1" long 1/2" extender. Perhaps this is what plug sets are for :)

I'm going to see what I can find on ebay/amazon.

i use a 6"extension bar
 
I'm sure I remember doing one for a friend and he said it had plastic in can't remember or it was him being stupid was going to say if so change it for the metal type even if you use the extension bar its still at a very slight angle because of the h/ brake drum the do not need to be done up mega tight as some seem to think
 
Don't get me started on the plastic diff filler plugs :)

I'm going to buy a couple of brass ones - as recommended by urbanpanzer on his website (they're D1 radiator plugs) - to replace the plastic ones I'm going to shred getting off next week :)

I've already tried a 21mm spanner and socket on them - they both slipped and someone has obviously already tried using a screwdriver in the slot judging by the deformation!

As to the original problem - for me with any length of extension bar is that the handbrake drum is in the way - even my wobbly extenders are tight up against the drum.

What really annoys me is that I was the fool that did it up two weeks back and I know I did not power it into place :rolleyes:

So I'm going to buy a new filler plug and a little extender and see where that takes me

Honestly if the extension bar is long enough to clear past the drum you can get your rachet or t bar t on it just make sure you have tapped it in

You're probably right about the extender - its what I used last time but its all making a mess of the plug and I just want to make it easier next time too...

A stumpy little extender should resolve this - though I'm tempted to a new breaker bar with a less fat head - my Sealey one just won't fit in the gap or not foul on the cable.

She's back on the ground now - next week I'll be fully tooled up for the job.
Or at least prepared with all the replacement plugs :)
 
This time, a 5" long 1/2" extension bar worked a treat.

I did not need to tap it in place it just went in smoothly!

As to why the same bar did not work the last time eludes me.

Your be surprised at how many types there are and machining tolerances ....

Yeah - but here's the rub...

When they did not fit last time, I bought some new ones.

This week they did not fit - but the old ones did!!

Last time the darned thing just would not fit and nor would my wobble bar

This week the non-wobble one just clicked straight in!

If it wasn't for the fact that the non-moving part of the handbrake drum is attached to the transfer box I'd swear the two had moved apart.

Hmm....Maybe that explains the grinding noise....:)
 
Brake drum could of turned into an oval over heat and time and the position of the drum is different to the last time you tried ;)
