What is the test procedure for the switch, is it just a case of lifting the center console to gain access to the wires on the back of the switch and test with a volt meter or is it more complex than that?

So went back to the car this morning, started fine no issues so can't be the battery as it untouched overnight. I drove home and it was OK, turned it off outside the house and now it won't start again. I guess I need to investigate further if the starter is getting a crank signal

Thanks for the suggestion, but no I ran the gear shift up and down in case it didn't get it was in park. Also had handbreak on and foot on the brake peddle. Something is telling the starter not to turn or it is and it ain't turning. My guess, starter relay but I can not seem to locate it and...

Don't know your car but on my last 300tdi disco rev counter was driven by the alternator. I guess it gets an output based on speed it is spinning. If the battery light and rev counter are out then my guess would be goosed alternator. Easy tested with a volt meter.

I put my diagnostic machine on it a while back before MOT and it pointed to the sensor fault and identified which sensor so that was the one we swapped. Light went out, MOT passed, car was used for a week as my mate had some friends over from the continent and was fine but now the light comes on...

Attached is the box of the new sensor fitted plus the one removed, the part numbers look the same. If not the sensor what possible other reason can it be for intermittent fault.

Battery is new and kept topped up as stored in a dry shed. I'll get the part number and post it when my mate gets back to me. Thanks

I had a similar issue which turned out to be water egress at the camera. You can take the guts out and put a cheap reversing camera in as I did, think it was about a tenner from eBay. You will have to cut and solder the ends and try and get one where the control connector which is a plastic part...
