    1972 petrol starter motor

I have a 72 petrol S3. Mines bolted in a bracket, which as I remember earths the solenoid. My starter wouldn't turn over with the solenoid clamped in position, had to replace the solenoid last year and made the mistake of leaving it dangling

How much oil are you using/losing in a week?

I'm losing a little bit. Needs a change really, just a bit from the sump, little leak from transfer box gasket too. One thing to check... is the base of dipstick tube. Previous SIII liked to shake this loose resulting in lots of oil leaking, used to leave black dots on the back window!

    Brakes failed MOT

I took my landy to a nice neat garage where they have a reception area, people with ties and computers. A watercooler and a ruthlessly efficient customer service policy. It failed on all sorts of b*llocks, spectacularly a list a mile long. Non structural corrosion, hazard lights not working...

SIII Petrol: No Spark After 'Wading'

Well I'm not sure which of the many variables I've tinkered with did it, but she started. Hoorah! Thanks for the advice :)

SIII Petrol: No Spark After 'Wading'

Thanks for the replies, I've ordered a set of leads, good to add them to the spares box anyhow. I've cleaned the earth straps from the battery neg to the battery tray and starter motor neg to the chassis, no joy, have I missed one?!

SIII Petrol: No Spark After 'Wading'

I cleaned up the points and changed the condenser, rotar arm and dizzy cap. Battery seems fine, i know multimeter can be deceptive but wipers and indicators normal speed etc. I am going to put it on charge tonight anyway. Last time I drove was all low speed, wipers and lights. Depth? I'd say...

SIII Petrol: No Spark After 'Wading'

Hello, I was in those floods on the news last week! Landy got me home safe and dry but a few days later wouldn't start... Cranking fine but no spark. Tried the spark plug on the block from dizzy, nothing. Tried swapping the coil (both Lucas) as I have a spare, no change. Tried connecting...

    Wheel cylinders

Totally agree about the brake lines erm..breaking. I had a sod of a job getting unions undone and broke a line trying. So as well as brake line beg steal or borrow a pipe flaring kit!

    bonnet types

My early SIII has the 'razor edge' bonnet, my later model diesel I had a few years ago had the rounded bonnet and was a standard 88 model. I think the razor edge was phased out early in SIII production.

    brakes seem easy....

What he said, sort of, adjustment of the snail cams. This is a good description Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - Hydraulics - Brake Adjustment second to last paragraph

    Gearbox - Can’t engage reverse!

Not sure if its the same setup on the S2 box but I had an S3 which jammed into 1st, turned out to be one of the reverse gate springs had come off and jammed behind the stick. Take the transmission tunnel off and have a look. I was sweating over the cost of a new gearbox and contemplating...

New to this - advice please

Saw an Ex Navy Landy locally, had, "ROYAL NAVY" on the side in the original lettering, slightly newer but perfectly matching the existing typeface the owner had added "(RETD)" after it!

    misfire on s2a

Lots of possibilities the only thing I would say is I had very erratic misfiring hard to pinpoint to any particular actions or types of driving and it was a duff coil (3 month old Brit Part bought by mistake in my case!) as has been suggested as a possibility above.

Bought a 2.25 starter motor recently?

Just about to chase up my Bearmach one haven't had the call yet to say it's in, there is a stock issue on them, I think lots of people will chance it with a BritPart one, not me, but I will chase it up as the old Lucas one disintegrating doesn't sound like fun! Typically after starter motor...

Low fuel light and reversing lights.

I've got one of those pull on reverse lights, glows green when on, looks smashing except the shell of the reverse lamp containing a fossilised light fitting was the first thing I took off after buying. I once failed an MOT partly because the 'hazard lights didn't work' errr what hazard lights...

Just got a Series 3. Need some help with instrument panel.

Owners handbook and the Repair Operation Manual (excellent) are still in print and available online as pdfs, I don't know where precisely cos I prefer having the books. Don't bother with a Haynes manual unless you find one dirt cheap, though the Haynes Restoration manual is worth a read. You'll...

    Help please!

Sounds like "Wind Up". Not a wind up... but the condition brought on by using 4x4 on normal roads in a vehicle not fitted with a third differential. All the "backlash" is taken up in one direction, because you're driving on hard ground and the average distances travalled by front and rear axles...

Bought a 2.25 starter motor recently?

There's a bit of stock issue with Bearmach currently. Managed to get one ordered locally, both Boxhall LR and Paul Rutter in West Sussex can get hold of them, currently Paul Rutter have one in stock.

    Another Whine

Could be a tool left somewhere that dropped out? A ring spanner on a the back of a prop-shaft nut, very easy to forget things when the phones going and the kettles on! Is it still making any kind of suspicious noise now?

Bought a 2.25 starter motor recently?

Nope, its my only vehicle, need to be a bit speedier than sending mine away, or attempting to recon mine myself. It's currently being unreliable and wanting to die and there aren't enough hills on the coast! Britpart are forking rubbish. I'd rather buy just one starter motor this year.
