Hello,

I was in those floods on the news last week! Landy got me home safe and dry but a few days later wouldn't start...

Cranking fine but no spark.

Tried the spark plug on the block from dizzy, nothing.
Tried swapping the coil (both Lucas) as I have a spare, no change.

Tried connecting a spark plug direct to the coil, removing and reconnecting +ve: weak spark.
Tried connecting another HT lead direct to the coil, still a weak spark.

Checked all fuses - fine.

I'm just wondering if there's something common to wading, damaging an earth connection somewhere or something that might be causing the problem?

Seems the spark from the coil is weaker than i would expect. I checked the resistance on both coil's primary windings and its normal.

Any bright sparks (ho ho) have any other ideas?

Thanks as ever,

J

ppoints and condenser full of crapp and water maybe or battery acid got diluted maybee damp got in the loom and interfeiring with the current flow to the coil

how deep did you go ??

I cleaned up the points and changed the condenser, rotar arm and dizzy cap. Battery seems fine, i know multimeter can be deceptive but wipers and indicators normal speed etc. I am going to put it on charge tonight anyway. Last time I drove was all low speed, wipers and lights.

Depth? I'd say sustained up to the hubs and the odd bit of axle submersion. More of a thorough splashing and soaking than a really worrying submersion! All roads were closed going home, I 'sailed' past the Police road closed sign following a learner car Focus!

id clean up the earth strap going between the engine and chassis as thats not much higher than the axles and could have been disturbed on any floating debres such as yanked by a bit of tree wich would effect the spark by weakening the circuit on that side of it

this would not effect the lights and other anciliarys just the spark and its worth 5 mins checking and cleaning anyway :D:D:D

HT leads could be waterlogged, water gets into the joins between cables and conductors, cable surface can break down. Turn the engine over in the pitch dark and see if there's any blue tracking anywhere in the system.

Thanks for the replies, I've ordered a set of leads, good to add them to the spares box anyhow.

I've cleaned the earth straps from the battery neg to the battery tray and starter motor neg to the chassis, no joy, have I missed one?!

negative wire for the coil could be busted with the disturbance of changing the coil or crap in the female blade connector on the end of that but thats it all the others are anciliarys (lights n stuff):smokin:

Well I'm not sure which of the many variables I've tinkered with did it, but she started. Hoorah! Thanks for the advice :)
