Soak in de-greaser does the trick. I use the 'No Nonsense' stuff from Screwfix - does a pretty good job too depending on what mixing ratio is used. I think its reasonably priced for 5 litres - 8 or 9 quid I think.

I've just bought a replacement reservoir lid from ebay, search for item 291559212630 - fits perfectly. Paid a fiver for it.

Just spent an hour or so fettling the few pits with a fine diamond file and then with progressively finer micromesh. Cant see there being anything to damage the wiper seal.

Seems the general consensus is to fit gaiters then. I will get a new set ordered. Thanks all.:)

Hahahaha - I've got a special little funnel that'll be perfect for getting it all back in! In two minds as whether to actually refit gaiters, given the amount of muck that was in them.

+1 I've just done the rears on mine today after a strip down to renew leaking hub seals, half shafts in pretty good nick, but flange splines were more like pointy teeth than splines. Its taken a bit of transmission slop out though.
