Finally got round to changing the cam case breather. Takes about an hour. Remove engine cover, remove air filter cover (bolt at the back a bit of a pain). I also had to take off the injector wiring harness and disconnect one fuel return hose from the injector which was preventing me removing the filter. Got the whole set from Duckworths - £25. I've seen some kits cheaper but looking at the state of mine, glad I replaced it all. Cars done 75K, had it since 60K but doesn't look like it ever been changed.

And....Did you notice the difference once you changed it?

My 2002 TD4 has done 82,000 miles, I've just ordered the same from Duckworths.

Thanks,

Jon.

Believe it or not, that filter does look to have been changed at some point, you can almost still see the woolly look of the filter itself. Mine at around 53k miles was totally solid with a black bitumen like coating. One of the other members has found an updated part available only from BMW which has got rid of the actual filter part & has some other gubbins instead. A lot of the cheaper kits you see are filter only & not the whole unit incorporating valve assembly.
Glad you managed to change yours, it's got to be one of the most worthwhile jobs on a TD4.

PS Jon, if your filters never been done at 82k you will notice a big difference. If it has been done, probably not.

It did have fully LR SH when I bought it - appart from last 15K so possible it had been done, yes it didn't seem totally blocked. Had a motorway run upto York last night and it ran very smoothly - although I also chucked in an injector cleaner into the tank. What sort of affect would it have on the running? - I did it mainly to prevent oil coming out of where it shouldn't!

Hey Bonny.. I agree wiv Chomi, yours looks pritty good, ive just changed
mine, un it was thic black solid tar-like ****e  never been changed
and its only dun 72k:(
But, yep... it runs a lot bedder now & wiv the EGR dun away wiv aswel:)

Landi, the revised recommended interval is now 12k miles, so yours is due a change.

Greenie's right, fitting that egr bypass makes a very noticeable difference.

Bonny, When I first got my car was quite gutless & I noticed that the oil level reading on the dipstick was high even 10 minutes after a run, but would be ok if I left it for hours. I stumbled across a guy on ebay selling a duff turbo (for someone to use as an exchange unit) & explaining what had killed it. further searches led me here & I changed my breather asap - it made a big difference.

your choice, you can change the whole breather assembly or just the element and clean and reuse the rest.

Nice 1
Many thanks:):):)
ye mate did mine soaked in oil brought one of them filter only kits easy but watch them star trox nuts pain on injector wiring holder theres no need to remove the airfilter cover.drives smooth well worth it here every 12000 miles is the normal change. worth giving EGR valve a clean to

Bypass EGR and knock out the 'CAT' substrate and listen to that turbo whistle freely for the first time in its life.

Bonnybrook, this thread is well out of date.
Use the BMW replacement, works on a centriguge method and doesn't get blocked, can be washed and re-used.
Part no. is 11 127 799 367 only available from BMW dealer approx £18.

Just fitted the BMW crankcase breather part on mine, come complete with new seals, been told you can more or less forget about it now as it has no filters-just a wipe out now and then.worth the £40 plus i paid. Dave
