Can someone explain SDD JLR IDS, VNCI, Topix, DoiP to me?

Sometimes too much information can be overwhelming. With posts like this, I read comments that say "there is plenty on the net", but that's the problem. Too much to get a simple Newbie answer - What is this stuff and what do I need to buy?

I have an Autel MP808 OBD reader, but it does not let me do things like turn off the auto door locks, and I clearly have some heat soak malfunctions that are not throwing off error codes. In my search for electronic diagnosis and change parameter software, I have come across an alphabet soup of tools, but as a newbie it's really hard to understand what it means, what it does, and what I need to buy to let me DIY for a Freelander 2 on a remote island in the south Pacific where there are no readily available experts.

> It seems there is something called a VNCI JLR DoIP diagnostic scanner, which I presume does what my Autel does.
> Then there is something called SDD/Pathfinder/CCF tools/SEEDKEY SDD software. Does this go on a windows laptop?
> After that special support TOPix online account for JLR coding/programming

At places like AliExpress there is VNCI FOR JLR DOIP for Jaguar for Land Rover Diagnostic Scanner with SDD V165 Pathfinder V374 256G SSD Software (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006991857296.html)

I also read posts about Foxwell OBD readers, but some say what I already have MP808 is as good or better.

What is on offer that I should buy?

SDD is the Land Rover system. It stands for Symptom Driven Diagnostics, and it requires a laptop plus a lead. I think it covers vehicles from 2006 onwards, and will do everything you want it to, if it can be done. That said, it’s not the easiest of tools to use, and can get daunting with the vast range of functions. If you are serious about diy on your FL, and are fairly savvy, then go with this, IMO.

You can buy it pre-installed on a second hand laptop, with a cable ready to go, from various sellers online.

I bought a ‘standard’ icarsoft scanner for my F1 but soon sent it back as it didn’t connect to some ECU’s. I then bought the PScan tool, which in my view is the best available for an F1 (only). PScan is built by a guy on this forum.

I have SDD for my F2. There is a thread on SDD on here.

Thanks for that advice.

I've had a look at the thread, but at 32 pages and 638 posts finding the key information is a challenge - it's information overload.

I dug out an old IBM Thinkpad Z60t that runs XP Pro and amazingly it still runs. I also have a cable for my Autel MP808 that has OBD on one end and a DB15 pin on the other to hook to reader.

>Is there something special about the SDD cable or might this do?

After determining that, I would need to find where to get V131, which I understand is the best for my 2008 FL2.

>Any suggestions or where to find the code?

When I bought the car a month ago, it was throwing up a check engine light where my OBD pointed to the MAF sensor. Having encountered a dirty sensor on my 2004 Jaguar XJ6, I removed the MAF, used MAF cleaner to clean it, and after a few times the check light came up, it has gone and the only error codes showing are related to the sound system and climate control.

However, it has the heat soak problem... drive ten minutes, park ten minutes and it does not start for another ten minutes. Reading forums, it suggests sometimes this happens and does not throw an error code. So I have placed an order for just about every sensor (fuel, cam, crank, Ox, etc) and will begin replacing them. I'm not buying OEM, which would be cost prohibitive, but in my experience with Jags and Mercedes, China has come a long way in quality control. I will report on that part in another thread.

But I understand from one post that I will require SDD to tell the ECU to relearn the MAF. Thus, I am trying to learn what I need to get and what I need to do to make SDD work.

Given my distance in NZ, I would prefer not ordering a preconfigured laptop if I have one that will already do the job without a days worth of frustration.

Appreciate your, and anyone's advice.

I’m by no means qualified enough to steer you on SDD configuration or support. Perhaps ask in the SDD thread? There are friendly faces in there.

Throwing sensors at it might not be the best solution, but I understand your frustration. Be very careful with Chinesium sensors, it’s not unknown to have a faulty one right out of the box (I have in the past), you can end up chasing your own tail. Replace 1 at a time, so you can monitor changes…
