I´m not new to vehicles, I find my tools in the garage and built a few US cars before. I have never really considered a Range Rover as a daily, but always liked the design. Right now I´m in to resuscitate a Series 3 88", I´m hopeful of the outcome from this.

The other day a 2005 Range Rover Sport TdV8 came up for sale here (in Sweden). The seller states the engine is shot from being filled/driven with petrol. The add says everything else works, nice leather interior, "beatiful" metallic blue exterior etc etc. It does not state actual milage. The car is just a 30 min drive from where I am, so I can pop over anytime.

Questions are: What´s the value of this car? Ballpark figure will do.
Replacing the engine. A friend of mine had a newer Discovery on which the turbos had to be replaced. He said the only way the authorized mechanics could get to the engine/turbos was to take the body off. 3 times as the turbos continued to brake down. So, what´s involved in replacing the engine in this 2005 Range Rover Sport TdV8?

Both me, but especially my wife will be forever thankful if you can talk me out of this as soon as possible.
Thank you//Car1

driving a modern diesel with petrol in the tank, until it stops, will do plenty of damage. the system will need a good flush/clean, then look at possibly seized/worn FIP at a minimum, I'd get the injectors checked too. the 'engine', ie, heads, block etc should be OK

First things first @gstuart is our man for DiDs. If there's a question he can answer it.
Value = whatever someone is willing to pay for it in the condition it is in. Have a look on your local autotrader and ebay platforms to get an idea.
Rather than just 'shot', can you get a proper description of issue/s. Also how far did they drive with petrol. How much petrol was put in tank.
As far as I recall, @gstuart and others will have definitive answer, the body has to come off for engine change.
However, depending on answers to above and advice from the DiD guru, who knows if it needs to come out.
Good luck and happy hunting :)

Depending on the price of the car, and the engine damage, which could make that particular one a bad buy, I have a hard time to talk you out of a good Range Rover! And that one looks good! Being a Diesel means, no idea about actual Diesel prices in Sweden, reasonable fuel economy. Emissions and particles could be a problem, depending on where you live.

From what I understood, petrol in a modern Diesel can kill everything form injector pumps to valves.

Not just the engine at that age. The cars post 2002 seem to corrode in sunlight. If you do go for a later model then look for an L322 with the Jaguar v8 engine in it. Anything else will bite and draw blood. If it chomps down on your wallet's financial artery it will bleed out all your funds in under 3 months.

EDIT: I have heard rumours the turbos can be done without taking the body off. However, I also hear tales of them repeatedly failing so there's clearly an issue there that can clog something up. That's before you get onto all the other issues.

Ok I regret asking about the value. I don´t know how many times I´ve had thought the same when being asked that question. I was more thinking "no matter how cheap it is, stay away from it". This one is app £4K, and that sum would take me and site manager to Cyprus for a week. I´d say it´s "overcomeable" and rather spend it on another vehicle. But if total amount of work and funds involved replacing/rebuilding the engine would ad up to more that, says 3 weeks in a decent resort, I will stay home, fiddeling with what I already have. Owner states "It was filled and driven with petrol. Then shut off and flushed. When started again it made typical no good noices and then died. The bottom/rotation parts are gone, heads should be fine, turbos are new" As for corrosion, yes I have not seen any Range Rover, except possibly when absolutely new, that was´nt attacked by cancer. This one looks to be fine, as stated by the seller, and I´m only a few minutes away, so can inspect on sight. If it involves taking the body off, I will probably pass this one. But I believe I will have to see it...
Thank you//Car1

Ok one more pic then. I´m sorry to say I think it looks cool...

I would never pay £4K for a 2005 with those engine issues. You could easily end up spending twice that sorting it, unless you can weld, paint & do all the mechanical stuff yourself.

Hi

plus 1 what’s already been said , indeed £4k is a lot of money with possibly a blown engine , if the engine reqs replacement u could be looking at another £4k +

However I think it was the TDV6 2.7 and option of the Ford TDV8 3.6 in 2007, 4.4 petrol V8 again I think up to 2009 ??

also the sport has complicated suspension , so if that needs work on the active roll bar valve block that alone is around £700 , need the engine working so that can be fully road tested

good job it hasn’t got adaptive damping as each strut are around £600 each

Also don’t know the mileage , the TDV8 suffer with timing chain tensioner issues

so all in all is a big unknown of what else could be wrong , but at the end of the day u could spend £5k before breakfast

personally , after buying and restoring a discovery 3 which are very similar to the RRS i would save ur money and look for something else that at least can be driven and systems tested

Think it's the oil pipes that clog up, people don't change them when they do the turbos ,recipe for disaster.

Thanks, I´m back to normal now.

Wish I had thought to ask first, have a beautiful 2001 P38 same colour as the one you were looking at, got it at a genuine 63 K it has done 6 k with me.
It developed a small leak couldn’t find it for love nor money, turns out the piston sleeves are knackered now I’m looking at 4 k for repairs.

Thats a bummer mate.... :(

Not a garage as such, he’s a bloke well known around here for his knowledge of all things LR, I told him the problem and at first he though heater but as soon as I told him about pressure remaking in the header tank even after a couple of days non use, he just said “your engines knackered”
He then went on to give me chapter and verse on all things Thor.
He said it would be about 4K to repair using what he called “top hat sleeves” or a cheaper option would be to replace it with a diesel, I think he mentioned a 3.7 bmw?
