Firstly, let's not worry about the 'do you need one' argument, I do.
I know a few people have done this - I have an analogue tachograph to fit to my 04 disco 2.
There are some grounds, a permanent live and an ignition live - I reckon I can manage that lot from the body and fuse box. What I'm not sure about is:

a) I need to tap a wire that's live only when the lights are on - is there an easily accessible one?
b) I need to tap a signal from the ODB - does anyone know *which* ODB wire that is likely to be?

Then I need to figure out where it's going...

Most of the places that supply them will talk you through the fitting process. vdotachograph.co.uk would be one example.

If it comes on an OBD2 style plug then you could just stick it in, but if it has to be permanently wired in then you deffo need to know which one.
Thort they had to be fitted at an official place anyway.:(:(:(
 
It's just a signal wire.
As it's < early 06 you can self-fit an analogue one. They can be fitted anywhere as long as you have an LED that indicates it's on. I'm actually thinking of putting it in the otherwise bloody useless door pocket if I can get the wires to flex nicely.

(and truth be told I specifically bought an older vehicles because the price of a modern digital tachograph + fitting + calibration is likely to set you back best part of 2 grand - which for something I'll probably do a couple of dozen times a year was just not worth it.
