As @Ratae says, there's usually a bit on the receipt, telling you to check them after 'x' miles. I have no idea of the science behind it, but it was one of the first things I was taught when taught to drive. @wammers @Saint.V8 @holidaychicken , any idea of the science?
I always check immediately after they do them. Then when I get home , and again after my first run out. It's not paranoia when they are out to get you ;)
To be EXTRA safe Gold Rover, you'd best check immediately BEFORE you let them change your tyres too!

You sure ? Cos if they're loose, the wheel might come off when they change the tyres :eek: ;)

My OTT habits come from being taught to drive in the Army. Which included changing a wheel yourself, and woe betide you if you didn't check, check and check again. :D
 
pleased you are safe mate but I would be having some serious words with the tyre company, this checking your nuts after so many miles is just pure rubbish.
It was, thankfully, only at a fast walking pace when the wheel came off the hub. I felt something wasn't correct and braked slowly as the last wheel nut was spat out. As you probably read earlier in the thread, I had a quiet word with the Manager in workshop, away from customers. He and the experienced guy who did the job were absolutely mortified. Shiny new nuts arriving Tuesday, so just pottering about locally until then. They didn't try saying I should have checked, that's othe forumites on here. No real damage done. If they'd tried deflecting blame, I'd have taken a totally different approach.

My dear old Mum told me "it costs nothing to be polite son..." and I've always tried to apply that idiom to both personal and business life. I haven't ALWAYS been successful, but shouting and making loud demands is not my style. A mistake was made that could have have far more serious consequences. Thankfully, that wasn't the case and both the branch manager and fitter concerned have dealt with the matter correctly and, so far, to my satisfaction.

Guys, this was a plain and simple cock-up. No crossed threads as wheel nuts taken from each of other three wheels plus the last one to drop off all did up cleanly after checking studs for integrity.
Let's just get on with solving problems for fellow formurites instead of positing a problem that's been dealt with.

Full complement of 20 wheel nuts on P38 again!
New front discs and pads put on by my usual garage yesterday too! All that was left of one of the pads looked more like a shim...never seen one like that before. MUST get my ears syringed, as I hadn't heard any squealing!
Pistons on that side had gone way beyond normal range and popped out! Disc was toast and very badly scored. Strange how only one pad was so worn; other three on front had LOADS of friction material left.
Wheel nuts issue now put to bed!
Getting ear wax syringed top priority...
