Breather tubes

hi guys I have just installed an extended breather on the rear axel a previous owner has extended some in the past so ther are two under the bonnet one for the front axel i assume the other is for the transfer or gear box do they have separate breathers or is there just 1 for both?

Transfer-box and main gear-box have separate breathers, there should be three breathers terminating at the rear of the engine.

Thanks looks like the previous owner only did 2 breathers so I’ll find the final one and extend it

May have combined the gearbox and transfer box. I have done this on mine so there is only a single breather coming up from the gearboxes and one for each axle.

May I jump in and ask where the breather for the rear axle is normally brought up to? My defender has a snorkel, but I understand that is more for dust than water unless the gearbox and axle breathers are extended. I've got three breathers coming up to the back of the engine, but I can't find where the rear axle one is.

The one for the rear axle as standard comes up just underneath the the tub from memory. very easy to see if you crawl underneath and just follow the pipe. Mine are extended to a manifold block on the bulkhead and then with a single tube to the top of the snorkel.

I’m not sure where it’s supposed to come up but I brought mine along the axel and up into the light box in the rear corner doesn’t really seem to be a proper place for it to go
