P38A Timing chains and sprockets install - what else is required?

My gauge is pretty clear perhaps you have a different one? Should be able to set it accurately, it’s the patience of tightening up without any slight movement will be my downfall if any

The injection pump should not be movable by hand in the static timing process. It should be just slack enough to be tapped gently either way.

That is the bit that worries me. Few have mentioned (Grrr too I think) they had problems torquing them without it moving ever so slightly, taking few attempts.

I’m hoping to get a few local jobs, that way I can take my time if needed and walk to work so there is no rush.

I think you maybe mistaking the pump mid section bolts for the pump mounting nuts. Pump top has nothing to do with static timing.

Possibly mixing them up, does sound like me.

I plan on adjusting from where the bolts hold whole pump on, where it goes through to the sprocket. Twist it round to adjust (tap gently with bit of wood) with final movement towards the engine

There are 3. Two easily to get to and the third is a *@"!
And one of mine (stud I think) even came out whilst being tightened!

Pump top was definitely a PITA.

FIP I did 3 times checking I got the same result, just in case. Cannot remember if it moved or not now. It'll be in one of my threads if it did. I remember one of my bolts stripped itself when torqueing up. That was a brown trousers moment.

Hi all, still alive. Work has most definitely gotten in the way. Rommel still on the drive way waiting for the work. I need time off plus a break in the weather. Wish me luck in April.
Had to get an Audi Q7 to drive around in for work. Guess what? Air suspension faults. Luckily I cut my teeth on a P38 - nothing phases me now hahaha.
I'll update this thread once I re-start proceedings and I will include photos :D
