My Optima red top has finally died after several harsh winters. My budget wont allow another atm. Can anyone recommend a battery around the 100 quid mark that will fit ? Cheers
 
Hi Omega , online at £80.00 3 yr warranty delivered , make sure you order right one i.e. 1000ca is best for 4.6 v8 p38 regards Mozz

Battery Megastore MF31-1000, it's the largest battery that will fit. Less than £90 delivered in the UK I think. My last one from them lasted 8 years and was killed by the alternator.
 
For the past 10+ years I've relied on standard 72AH / 600CCA batteries with a two year no-quibble warranty purchased from my local auto factor. Each one has lasted over five years on a 3.5efi (same battery spec for the 200/300i models) that's only an occasional driver & has to park outside in all weathers.
I have never owned a P38 or desired one, but I can't understand why they seem to need such a large battery, after all a RV8 is a RV8 albeit with an extra litre capacity, presumably it's to cope with all the extra lecky gadgets & the parasitic drains many owners seem to suffer :rolleyes:

References have got mixed up, your battery is fine for your car. However you could if you wanted to fit one of higher capacity. The 1000 cca batteries are specifically for diesel engines that require far more cranking power than petrol engines.

Ok but diesels usually have a larger capacity battery with more cranking amps. P38 petrol 72 amp P38 diesel 107 amp. It is pretty standard in the motor industry for diesel engine cars to have larger capacity batteries than petrol engine cars. Diesels are much harder to crank than petrol engines due to their much higher compression ratios. Also after the first couple of cranking RPM on a petrol engine there is little compression resistance. Compression resistance is always present on a diesel because the cylinders are always full of air.
 
The RR's from Mk2 (P38A) on, get progressively thirstier on the battery. The diesel takes more oomph petrol can manage. So many devices one or two draining will tip the balance and good luck finding which :)

Newer the worser - yes worser is made up ;)

Ok I’m aware of that even though I have never gone near a Diesel engine even the modern ones, petrol only for me:)
But, Land Rover obviously didn’t think so at the time I purchased my two Land Rovers, one battery fits all back then for those models, which the OP has :D
