The minor benefit would be keeping the car on the road rather than scrapping it.
If that's the other alternative, then agreed, it keeps it on the road. However if it's just done to save a few quid on tyres, then I'd not recommend it myself.
The major benefits are to maintain dampening of the engine, maintain a smoother ride, maintain lifespan of engine mount components etc.
Is that unintentional benefit of the props being fitted, true for the crown wheel less IRD?

The propshafts on a working IRD do give a degree of damping, especially when under acceleration loads. I'm not sure how much beneficial damping is available without any load on the front CV joint. The bottom of the power unit moves away from the rear diff under acceleration, so unless the front CV is under load, it'll just slide out unhindered.

It's something to investigate further.

I know working propshafts definitely damp out power unit movements, when compared to having no propshafts, but haven't tried it on a free IRD.

So im guessing nodge is the absolute jobsworth of the forum
No way!

Unless you know an awful lot about these cars, ignore Nodge's advice at your peril!

What he says about running a Freelander in 2WD with or without the props is right (probably). They are best run as they were built in AWD setup. When mine went bang though, it was going to cost about £3.5k to fix it as 4WD here - so it got castrated to 2WD with the IRD rebuilt but with broken pinion gear untouched and broken crown gear removed. The main benefit has been 5 years great reliable service rather than scrapping the car because it would not get through a NZ WOF (MOT) without props. The car is safe, its basically a truck shaped Rover FWD car now I suppose, so although I can see how it could be seen as "fraud", its not to me.

I was only messing about with nodge. but im not in the position to get everthing all present and correct with this vehicle and for the money it will cost id rather save for somthing different down down the line.and make the best of what i have currently. thats why i started this thread
