Hi all need to either re build my gearbox, or buy something better. My Landy should be a series 3 box, but it isn't, so would prefer to have an all syncro box. Can the internals of mine be changed (simply) to make it all syncro? Or should I just get a series 3 box
Cheers

Fit a series 3 box is simplest way but it is possible to fit a 3 box with the bell housing clutch release system [ which was a better job ] from a 2a box.

the last e suffix series 2a boxes were all synchro ,but as long as your box is suffix b on you can convert to all synchro by changing lay shaft main shaft 1st and 2nd gears plus synchro hub and reverse idler, its a conversion ive done quite regular when rebuilding boxes so i know whats actually required ,,if a box needs rebuilding the added parts were likely going to be changed in any case and you dont need to alter clutch mechanism and pipe work

Thanks James sounds like a lot of work, will probably be easier for me to get a working series 3 gearbox.
Anyone got one?

I've got a Series IIA vehicle, and waiting for a rebuilt IIA gearbox to arrive from UK. Super hard to find a good rebuilt one here in The States. Even looking online at UK websites, I find it difficult to find a rebuilt IIA gearbox. Oh well. I am optimistic, and I'm sure it's going to be worth the wait.

Sorry to re initiate this thread, I am also going to be rebuilding my March 1969 series 2a suffix F land rover with a suffix E gearbox. Do you know if my gearbox is pre synchronisation as the clutch is solid so can't check for the moment. If it is pre synchro, which suffix of layshaft ,main shaft ,1st&2nd gear and synchro hub. As the Series 3 had both suffix A and B?

James not been on here for a while but if you read his post suffix E is a fully synchronised box , my box is suffix D and that’s got synchro on 1/2 gears and 3/4

when you say clutch is solid do you mean pedal won’t push down

edit

the factory built a small number of all syncro series IIA gearboxes just prior to converting the box into the series III gearbox. The all syncro series IIA gearboxes can be identified by a "S" prefix on the stamped number located on the transmission top cover. Since top covers can move about when multiple gearboxes are rebuilt, and a IIA gearbox is most likely to be rebuilt in the earlier documented style, the 'S' stamp on the top cover does not guarantee the gear box under the top cover is still all syncro.

That's right yes, the car is a new purchase so not started taking it apart yet.

Do not get confused between series 2a box suffix's and series 3 ones as when the series 3 box came out Land rover for some reason unknown started the suffix at A again!

Oh right, thank you. Bit strange of them to do that considering it’s the same box just updated. I’m probably going to keep mine original for now.
