wobble over speed ramps

Hi all
Q- when i go over a speed ramp or pot hole the steering whobbles all over no problems at speed just over bumps any idears.

they all do that

Have you got a steering damper fitted? On your steering arm there is a bracket linked to the chassis via a damper that could deal with a light wobble.

They don't all do that. It's likely that your bushes in the swivels require replacement or the pre-load requires adjustment. A simple start would be to see if you have any shims which can be removed which would allow the king pin to fit tighter. You might also want to remove any play there may be in the steering box but don't over tighten or you would experience excessive wear.

Are steering dampers standard? I've got no bracket for one but I wouldn't mind fitting. What's involved?

What Land Raver says most likely,but a worn out shock can give the same symptoms.

More than likley that the swivels/railko bushes require attention. Try disconnecting the steering arm on the hub and check with a spring balance you need about 14/16 lbs pull to move the arm if not remove shims from top kingpin if the railko bush feels ok for play until correct pull is achieved. Whilst you are under there check the spring U bolts are tight.
I run without a steering damper and have never felt the need to fit one.

I have the same issue and it’s really bad, originally when I bought the vehicle it had modular wheels and chunky tyres and wobbled all the time I went over around 30mph I sorted that by putting original wheels and tyres as those modular wasn’t balanced.

Now it doesn’t wobbled when just driving but hit a bump in the road at 30/40mph it’s wobbling like mad although I’ve noticed it quickly sorts it’s self letting go of the wheel and allowing it to pull usually to the left as the tracking is out, I’ve looked and everything looks good even the steering dampener but the suspension does look old but ok, no leaks etc.

I’ve also jacked the front end to check for play in the swivels and bearing but there’s no movement so I guess there ok?

My mate was along side of me on a dual carriageway and said the full wheel was wobbling and pooed his pants lmao.

Q is what cure did you find ?

I’m tempted to start by replacing the suspension and steering dampener first.

Start by checking all items noted in previous posts. A dead shock/damper on that corner will give the symptoms you have.Remove shock lower fixing and move it up and down by hand,there should be a good resistance and you should only be able to move it slowly.

Yeah I was going to give them a try but to be honest I think I’ll be just changing them straight away including springs, they look old and I don’t know what hammer they have had and I’ll be doing it up as a bit of a expedition type vehicle.

Let some of the air out of the tyres. Sorts most wobble out.

Swivel slack can be so slight you can hardly detect it visually. You need someone swinging on the road wheel while you get right under the axle and have a good look and feel. Obviously with the car well supported

I thought my MOT chap had gone mad but found the movement eventually. It was less than a badly adjusted wheel bearing. Easiest way is with a spring balance and a tug on the hub.

Perfect response from landy if you take them at slow speeds. If you go above 10 mph the whole steering system absorbs the shock cos leaf springs are hard. Always take speed bumps slowly just as you would off road.

Eccecessive play could be many things but the subtle one is the steering relay.

It’s not on leafs but I’ll have to have a good look at it.

Im going to get a video of it, if not the MOT tester can look lol.

If its got coil springs its not series

What is it running then? If its on coils is it an old range rover pretending to be a series or something different all togeher? If that is the case there is whole range of different bushes that could have worn to cause what you describe.

Had the same problem on my 90 that was the panhard rod bushes.... don't get that on a series

Looks like I’ve dug the wrong thread up after doing a search on “wobbling wheels” it’s a D reg defender 110, obviously I’ve commented on a series post... my bad!

I’ve didnt realise i commented on a series post after my search rather than duplicating a thread it’s not pretending to be nothing other than a diesel as it was a old v8, it’s a D reg 110.

Not a problem, I assumed it was the series in your profile pic.
For a 110 I would definitely check the panhard rod bushes you can get some very odd feeling symptoms when they fail. To a lesser extent while you are under there is is probably worth checking the radius arm bushes as well. Other than that everything else is the same, swivels, shocks etc.
