fuel problem p 38 2.5

need some advice i have brought a p 38 from a mate its a 1997/97 all is great but cant let the fuel go bellow half a tank other wise it runs crap above half it great been told its the fuel cender pump any help would be great

Sounds right, do a search there are lots of posts.Best drop the tank to change it and check/replace the rear brake pipes while you have wash access

Sounds like there is a hole in the pipe and it's sucking air in or some carp floating on the surface - may have to pull the tank pump to check it, it's pipes and the end that 'sucks'.

I replaced mine some years ago. Dropping the tank looked like a pain : I think I followed some advice on here and cut out a panel in the floor above the pump. Job was dead easy.

But you cannot check/replace the rear brake pipes through the hole.Dropping the tank is no biggy, as long as you run the fuel level down as low as possible.
 
As said above drop the tank, at the age of the p38 now if the brake pipes have not been done they probably need doing, and you don't want them letting go at the most awkward time.
 
Problem is, he can't run the tank down below half.
Anyone know if there's a drain cock on the tank?

No drain and if he syphons it there will still be fuel in it. When i did mine despite best efforts there was still around six gallons in when i dropped it. It's difficult to get the syphon pipe passed the surge valve.
 
Thanks for everyones help problem sorted now fuel sender wasnt working now new one fitted and all great now again many thanks
 
cut the floor took about half hour the tank was dropped about 18 months ago to change the brake pipes so didnt want the hassle again
 
I must admit when I have to drop my tank to do the pump and brake pipes I am considering cutting an access panel and making a nice swaged cover panel fixed with rivnut inserts and a seal while the tank is out.
