I'm finding sensors for gems v8s are becoming increasingly difficult to source. Eg throttle position sensor is no longer available from land Rover. New maf sensors are of dubious quality. Intake air sensors are very expensive as are cam sensors. These vehicles are now 20+ years old. The gems afaik was only fitted to the jags aj16 engine and the rv8s 4.0 and 4.6.. does anyone have Any alternatives they have used successfully? New or secondhand.
The gems was also favoured for sports cars (chimeara Morgan etc) which also means parts are even more sought after.
My contribution is the aj16 maf is the same with the plug at a different angle. The aj16 is not usable as the spring insert is at 90degrees to the land Rover part. The cam sensers are different the aj 16 having a sensor off the old distributor drive. Other sensors are identical ie knock sensor, temp sensors. No fuel temp sensor on a jag though they run much cooler. 19lb yellow top Ford mustang injectors are a straight swop complete with injector clip.
In the future a lack of good sensors will condemn these cars to the scrapyard I think.
Thor engines electrics are much cheaper and more easily available. I think it was a seven series management system initially.
Lucas went bust in 1996 and sagem 2005.
Any new parts are usually nos and snapped up by wealthy sports car owners!

ok, being a diesel owner I dont know much about the gems/thor motors unless I have one in front of me, 4.0 gems or thor?
4.6 gems or thor?
genuine question :(

Mine is a 4.6 gems from late 97. Saw two p38 today both diesels. Says it all really nice durable engine. The other issues these vehicles have are doable. Once them v8s go bang it's a large undertaking to sort them and is mostly sheer folly financially speaking. I'm sure the diesel was engine of the year a long time ago!

Pity mine's widdling on my drive, really.

For ease of description. Gems engine has a large oblong air box on top of it. Thor engine has what looks like a bunch of Bananas on top of it.. Basically just different engine control systems. Gems Lucas. Thor Bosch.

Used parts are available but the youngest are nearly 20years old and rv8 engine bay is a hot unfriendly place. Chinese maf sensors cause more issues than they solve. The maf sensors are extremely fussy and .3v out can cause terrible lean misfires with no indication the maf is faulty.

No old maf sensors rule for the gems. Lucas or sagem am20. Many are still alright and work fine. The Chinese copies are awful and can short inside. Other more expensive new maf sensors I don't know about. Anyone have experience with these? I'm thinking p38spares maf or others. K and n filters have killed more mafs than anything!
I think Bosch may still be available new( for the Thor ems)

I still have an allmakes maf in the shed (states 'made in china' on it) - was useless. Fitted a Bosch maf & all was well. Mine was a thor though.
