towing capacity

Hi guys ,can I tow a caravan with a weight of 1444kgs with my 1999 xedi ?

Hi if you have the handbook it will give all the weights in there i;m pretty sure that landrover say it will tow 2000kg ,but the caravan people recommend 85%of the kerb weight for new towers and upto 100% of kerbweight for experienced towers , you just need to check the actual vehicle kerbweight ,i have a td4 and i tow 1450kgs with no probs at all .

The biggest I've towed with my L Series was 300 concrete slabs which (calculating afterwards) is about 2,000kg, plus trailer and in a horrendous blizard! The trailer was a commercial one rated to 750kg and it popped a wheel of the hub! TBH, it struggled with that weight, partly due to the actual weight, partly weather conditions and partly due to the tyres squashing flat! My Bad! I learnt a fair bit that day about towing.

The next biggest thing I've towed is a Series 3 109 SSW which is about 1,600kg plus transporter trailer that was up to the job. The Freelander coped quite well, but I wouldn't want to do major journeys with that load.

Not sure how big kev1nlm's van is, but his L Series copes well with it...

if mine would have towed more I would have rescued the people with the discovery and horse box with two horses in , it had an engine fire why I do not know they had got the horses out , and when I passed by coming back home a couple of hours later they were still there although the fire service had gone at that moment I wish I had a defender or disco, also if you are in England and newly licenced you need to take a towing test I think.

Indeed check your licence you may need to take the towing test.

At 48 ,I'm ok to tow ,thanks for the info ,managed to buy a caravan which is light and know definitely that the freelander will tow .

There is a rule on the forum that if there's no pic, it didn't happen.

With the right conditions, you could happily "tow" a 40 ton trailer.... but that doesn't mean it's within the legal rating of the car, or your licence

Absolutely.
I have had to tow a fully loaded 44 ton artic off the inside lane of the A30, about 5 miles to a lay by on a summers evening, a few years ago. The HGV was suffering fuel shut off solonoid problems and for some reason the driver kept using the air up by riding the clutch. I managed to keep the engine running long enough for the air to come up to pressure, so the brakes would release. I gave the driver strict instructions not to touch the brakes or clutch. I then towed the thing with the Iveco 49-12 spec lift I was in. It made it although that 49-12 did struggle on a slight up hill section.

The biggest thing I've towed with my Freelander was my friend's Discovery 2 which was stuck in mud. The Freelander pulled him out without any fuss at all. Odd really considering that I was in the same mud hole as him.

I read some where that there was an landrover event and the booking in hut was across this muddy field every one got stuck be it a disco defender or series all but the freelander auto which sailed through. LOL

Before I stopped using the Freelander for towing, it was pulling a caravan that was 1500kg fully loaded. Coped with it well, even better when I stuck a synergy 2a on it.
