Hi all, newbie here.
hope someone can help! I have been searching high and low for information on homologation of my RR.
I have a late '99 P38 diesel. I really like the car, it is even the correct colour and interior I searched for and I have all the lovely leather and walnut extras (which I have slowly accumulated over the last two years of ownership) to fit. the problem is that I am currently living in Spain, so wish to import it (get it registered on Spanish plates). I have been quoted something ludicrous like 4000E to do this, as it requires "homologating", whatever that is. i'm sure it must meet with EU regulations from factory, surely. I was told that there should be a sticker in the driver's door aperture, is this correct on the P38? Google/LZ/RRnet searches have proved fruitless.
I understand that I may have to remove (if only temporarily) the factory tow bar and side-steps, but this is no problem
is a Certificate of Conformity a similar and sufficient thing? I visited Guy Salmon in England, but they were as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
any help much appreciated.
 
I just did this in Portugal.

The car must have a VIN plate on the slam panel under the bonnet. Mine didn't and LR got me one.

Then it is tested for conformity and roadworthiness, and any non-factory accessories must be removed.

do you mean LR in the U.K.? by email? was there a fee?
is this test part of the ITV (MOT) or is that a separate test?
my car has original LR factory accessories (Side-steps and 18" Hurricanes), but I have fitted these myself. i'm not sure if the towbar was fitted from the factory.
 
my car also has tinted windows but I think these may be the after-market type film. perhaps I only have to remove that from the front windows.
 
I had to do this to import a dutch car in to the UK in the late 1990's.

It involved sending the VIN to Citroen's head office in the UK, who sent me the homologation info.

Basicaly it was a sheet of info saying what factory it was built in and the date it was built, and what european directives it complied with. I think it might well have been the certificate of conformity.

I sent the lot off to the DVLA with an MOT and they sent me a V5 and a new number plate. I'd write to Land Rover telling then what you need, and they'll be able to help. I don't remember there being a charge when I did it.... but that was a long time ago now.
 
Doesn't matter if it is factory standard or not, it has to be fitted when built or on the certificate of conformity. So tell Land Rover what is on it now and hopefully it'll match your spec and the Spanish will ask no further questions.

Just shows what problems would be caused if the UK is at any time forced by the EU to adopt their directives to the letter.

If you saw some of the bodges in Eastern Europe you might wish the directive to come in faster! But it doesn't apply in more risk-averse societies such as ours. Just shows that you cannot homogenise a continent easily and one reason the direction the EU is taking is a mistake. Closer union? Why not? Single state and powers but with massive differences in culture? Madness.

Hi i live in spain,you only need to homologlate you car if it is not standard,sounds like someone is trying to rip you off.where about in spain are you i might be able to help you out ,i,m near alicante.

Hi Paul!

wow, that's sounds fantastic. as I mentioned above, I think the only non-original parts on it are the side-steps, tints and wheels (although I no longer have the originals)

do you live near Javea,i can put you in contact with a guy who speacialises in car imports ,he is very good and not a rip off,ps i,m not on commision haha.
 
I live between Campello and San Juan, so approx. 45 miles away. that would be great, thanks and i'm sure you'd deserve una cerveza fria if this chap can help

just a quick update:

I met up with "Marcel", as kindly recommended by "paul58" above and he seemed a nice genuine chap. When I explained my predicament, he asked "Homologation? Who told you that? I've imported loads of these over the years. Does it have side-steps? Does it have a tow-bar? Factory-fitted?, etc.
:D music to my ears. I have to get a couple of items sorted, then I shall give him the go-ahead.
Also, I e-mailed Land Rover and they replied that they would almost certainly be able to supply a Certificate Of Conformity if required. there would be a charge of £100
