Pulled into our local petrol station this morning for a Sunday paper and left the better half sat in the Disco. Returned, put the key in the ignition, all the usual lights lit up on the dash but nothing when I turned the key! No cranking or owt! This happened twice in succession so I was a bit worried. I decided to remove the key and lock the car and then unlock it. I then placed the key in the ignition and presto it fired up. I didn't argue I just drove home pronto! Got it home turned it off three times and it started up three times immediately at each successive turn of the key so behaving as you'd expect.
Anybody any ideas as this bus has been stupidly reliable in all the time we've had it and this is unusual.

Usually that would indicate that its not in park

On mine ive had it crank over without attempting to start but a locking and unlocking solved that problem too. Maybe just an issue with the immobiliser not deactivating properly

How long did you leave it before turning the key?

If the key does not have a transponder then the immobiliser will cut in approx 1 min after the door is unlocked. You can turn the key , dash will light up but engine not turn over or start.

If you press the unlock button again and then turn the key straight away it may work. You can easily see if this is the problem, go unlock the car, go sit in it wait a few mins and then try and start it.

I have a Rover 75 key fob I recoded to my disco2 and this does not have the transponder and has the same issue if I do not remember to re-unlock before I start.
Cheers

I had this interesting problem a few years ago and after some research found out that petrol stations tanks have automated meters, which communicate with the petrol station via the same frequency as that used by many car imobiliser transponders. This means that if your car is in a position on the forecourt where the signal from the tank meter is stronger than that of your key transponder then the immobilser will not be disabled. There are a couple of ways round this. The first involves hard work in pushing the car to another position on the forecourt. This worked for the first 2 times this happened to me. The second is a lot easier and involves making sure that the battery in your key fob is changed regularly and therefore gives a good strong signal. Seems to happen in Morrisons petrol station more often than others. If this has happened you still need to lock and unlock the car again after the immobiliser has set itself.

I had same in my case it was the ignition key/ barrel not quiet making proper contact.
Starter also had twice but that just tends to click
