Hi looking to change my old 300tdi had a day long test drive of a brand new 2.2 yesterday although lovely to drive and in many ways a big improvement i felt a bit let down by the speed of it didn't feel as fast and just wasn't had more torque low down which is always a bonus so my question is are the 2.4 ones any better than the new ones its not that in wanting a sports car i just want something with a little more get up and go. Will re mapping the new ones sort out the problem

I've also been to test a new 2.2 this week, and I didn't like it as much as the 2.4, the sales guy said the engine size on the new ones was smaller as they produced lower emissions. Sorry I don't know the technical bit to your question but I'm also interested in what the guru's on here think! X

I have got a 2.4 110 sw and currently using a new 2.2 90 while mine is being fixed. I am no expert by any means so can not tell you the technical stuff but this is what I think.

The 2.4 seems to be less refined but (marginally) quicker to get moving. the 2.2 definitely feels quicker once moving(from 30 -60 MPH) , not sure if this is all down to the 90 being lighter than the 110 but they both reach about the same top end. The gear box is a lot smother in the 2.2

the 2.4 sounds better and I prefer the driving experience of the 2.4. For me the 2.2 is a step towards making the defender a bit more user friendly and most non defender owners would say it’s a nicer car to drive.

However defender drives don’t fit into the normal category and I suspect a TD5 driver would think that the 2.4 was too refined

In short I like both but then I like the 90 I drove 15 odd years ago that made me want one ever since even though it had spent its entire hard life in Africa and you needed to use two hands to get it into first gear
