Ok, my clutch is just about to expire, its started slipping when Mr Turbo gets in the zone. Its a 1999 110 TD5 with 119000, miles on the clock.

Questions:-

  • Valeo or Britpart?
  • Is the dual mass flywheel likely to be ok?
  • Replace fork?
  • Engine out or gearbox out? its being done on my driveway.
  • Any other advice, things to watch out for.
As always, all advice most gratefully received

Thanks
Martyn

Questions:-

  • Valeo or Britpart? OEM - do it properly first time
  • Is the dual mass flywheel likely to be ok? So long as you dont drive it with the clutch slipping - slight wear can be honed
  • Replace fork? Not unless its knackered but change the release bearing every time
  • Engine our or gearbox out? its being done on my driveway. Your choice but either way they are heavy and awkward items - I'd go for engine out then you can tidy up the chassis and engine bay at the same time
  • Any other advice, things to watch out for. Take your time - get all the parts you need before starting the job

Thanks

valeo and engine out, sean will be along to tell you to take the gearbox out

i did gearbox out, other than being a heavy awkward bastid [thats just me] its quite straight forward and no draining of fluids

I'm looking at new clutch and flywheel at the moment.

I've decided on Rakeway Stage II Clutch Kit
You get a Solid Flywheel, AP heavy duty clutch cover, AP high performance clutch plate, new Aluminium (doesnt melt) release bearing, and new bolts for the thinner flywheel.

I havent seen a bad word written on Rakeway. They seem very knowledgable, and ensure that you are buying the appropriate kit for your vehicle (tuning state) and useage( heavy Max Weight towing etc)

I was under the impression that the fork snapping issue was only prevalent on Tdi models, as the td5 had a different fork. Can anybody shed any light on this?

Anyway, I'd go for Rakeway. Price is on par with LR Genuine Parts, and you dont have the worry of temperamental VM Flywheel probs in future - HOWEVER, some owners report a little more vibration when using the Solid Flywheel - not really an issue in a defender, as the vibrate / rattle anyway!

Rakeway is not cheap, but I would say quite confidently that you should never need another flywheel again, and the AP Racing clutch is one of the best available, so should far outlast the other makes.

at £315 for the stage one kit, that doesnt seem too much. Considering every time you need to change the clutch, it'll cost at best 5-10 hours labour, DIY, or at worst, £300-400 in a garage. It makes sense to put something in that will hopefully last much longer.

Spend a bit more now, to hopefully save money in the future on another clutch...

Not heard good things about solid flywheel conversions on the TD5. Its harsh on the gearbox which is why they fitted a dual mass one.

The clutch fork should be perfectly fine as they are a different design on the TD5 and dont have the wear through issues.
