Just perusing eBay when I spotted a NAS rear step / towbar for £150, bargain

Then I read the listing, these are new, made in a friends workshop

Can you just build a towbar and sell it for the defender, I know M1 classed vehicles have to have a type approved towbar but wasn't sure about a defender

Just wondering as it looks substantial enough but these days everything has to be EC approved, doesn't it

land rover defender rear long step bumper | eBay

I have a genuine one of those steps and i know they cost a hefty amount,
People make front and back bumpers for fenders and disco's all the time.
So yes i say go for it, it is up to the buyer of ebay if they buy it or not, you can sell what you want. :)

dont think its quite as easy as that , may get a visit from trading standards , probably in their remit , but even if thats not the case ,I hope hes got plenty of liability insurance !!!

If the vehicle the towbar is fitted to was registered before 1st August 1998 the towbar does not need to be Type Approved.

I think that applies to M1 vehicles (cars), the defender is N1 (commercial)

eBay provides a global marketplace so anyone can build something and sell it, I was just wondering if it's legal

It's only illegal if it's fitted to a post 98 motor. Loads of peeps make removable tow hitches etc for the 4x4 market & none of em are type approved. Tis why you can't buy a tank guard with a removable towhitch, for a D2. But you can for a D1.

Motorhomes did not need Type Approval towbars until around 2012 I think. Not sure if commercial vehicles came in than too or not.
