Just done a quick calculation and 4700 x 2700 in 7mm weighs 786 kilos. I am sure 5mm would be better and weld in a separate winch mounting plate straight to the chassis.
Also if you buy your steel from a proper steel stock firm most of them have the equipment to cut to size each piece and fold the various bends on their press brake, I had a dozen cuts and bends done recently for £20.

I also made my own press brake which I have bent 6mm in if you want the drawings I can post them up. ( I think I still have them ).

Yeah I thought it seemed ridiculous I'll just wait til I draw up the templates next week and buy the metal then because its definitely not gonna be 786kg 5mm would probably be strong enough but I might hit the middle ground at 6mm instead ?

Hmm there is a Thomas Grahams in town and they're a steel stock holder plus they deliver, might be worth taking the templates there instead. Winch plate wise you might have a point with that but I'd prefer it all integrated into one as it just feels like a better job to me.

Ok its fecking massive, it took up 3/4 of my discos boot and weighs in at about 50kg one of the wheels broke but I'll fix it at some point or mount it to something else. Its a big old beast though cant wait to start

it's a dinky wee thing,good welder mate ,i love my sealy 185 supermig which is pretty much identical.

don't burn a hole in your bedroom carpet with it

Yeah this would be the generation before, opened it up and it looks pretty beefy. I'm just going to have to work out the welder power as its 190 amp but it has a spot timer thing and 5 settings plus as well care to explain ?

It'll be going back outside to the back yard where that pic was taken, its the only properly flat surface I've got to weld on

you only need worry about wire speed and power setting

mines older and no spot timer but welds upto 4mm plate lovely on 3 -4 power and 6-7 feed rate and will happily do much larger work with the right prep. it's been extremely reliable with upto 8hrs solid use at a time. best £120 i ever spent cos the old boy gave me a 48 inch bed 10 inch chuck denham lathe with it as he was retiring .

I spent £170 on mine but it should weld up to 9mm I reckon as its 190 amp

In that case I've definitely got enough power haha just need to practice a bit and get used to this one

Gonna try and ask the pub for a big C02 one if not theres a gas place in Ulverston so not too far away. Might even be one in Kendal

Ok this is the paper mock, I didn't draw it to scale as I had no squared paper but its pretty close so it'll do for now. The real thing will be drawn tomorrow but at least I know how to make it work. I reckon it's gonna look pretty good once black powder coated



As I said not quite to scale and I didn't trim it quite right as I was tearing the paper with a ruler hence the slight bend on one side of the bottom etc……..deal with it. Real one will be done tomorrow afternoon. Or at least the first attempt will thank goodness for an unlimited supply of bike boxes

Just taken measurements of the original bumper on the disco and chassis mounts so after my lunch I'm gonna start to draw my full size template cant wait to start building this next week
