Hello all,

The radiator in my 99 disco 2 TD5 broke, as the nipple (stop laughing) snapped o after I tried to fit a new expansion return pipe (after that snapped the week prior).

Now, i've botched the expansion pipe on with sealing foam and it works fine, very little coolant loss.

I ordered a new radiator and it arrived a couple of days ago, however, because im british forces based overseas, it takes a week or 2 for small items to get to me from the uk and a month for large heavy ones (the radiator took just under 4 weeks).

I have a teng tools spanner set already and the spanner for removing the fan. However, I'm still waiting for my teng tools socket set to arrive and the retaining spanner to hold the fan wheel in place (slips in the belt, also have a new tensioner and belt to fit).

So, the question is, is it possible to change the radiator in my landy without removing the viscous fan? and will a spanner set ranging from 8 - 20mm (approx) be adequate to complete the job? Or do you think I should just wait for the items to arrive with a maximum waiting time of 2 weeks?

---------

the cars been effectively unreliable for about 2 months because of the slow mail system we have, and I just want to get it sorted now.

Thanks in advance
John

I have an 03 disco TD5 and i changed the radiator without removing the fan. Just be carefull when bleeding the system after refilling. The plastic bleed screw breaks off really easily. That spanner range will be ok but you will need screwdrivers too for the hose clips, or pliers if they are the spring type.
good luck
Mark

Hi John, I've done three in the last 2 weeks and I can assure you that it would be a real bûgger of a job to do, without removing the fan.

Thanks for the replys guys, im gonna try to tighten the belt with something so that i might be able get the fan off without the required spanner.

If I can get that off then ill give it a go.

Its funny you should mention the bleed screw. That snapped off around the same time and I replaced the top pipe with a new one. Seems my entire cooling system is quite brittle at the moment. In fact if i replace my waterpump too then i'd of replaced the whole coolant system lol!

Well, alot of hard graft and the new radiator is on and appears leak free, although I still need to take it on a long distance drive to make sure.

Just if anyone stumbles on this thread about taking the fan off, what I did was use a strop or a old set of underpants or similar and wrap it around 2 points on the drive belt. I then put a spanner through it and twisted it until the belt was super tight.

A bit of WD40 and a few knocks on the spanner with a rubber hammer took it right off.

Again guys, thanks for the help, although it could of been done without the removal of the fan (but would of been a mission), im glad I took it off.
