Hey has anybody got any photos of how the alternator is usually/best mounted on a 200tdi when fitted in a Series 3? Hopefully will be able to fire the beast up tomorrow :)

ida thought its best left where its sposed to be:D

It's a very tight fit to squeeze in all the turbo pipework into a series engine bay. In the Disco standard setup, the alternator is mounted above the PAS pump. In order to make more space, and because in many cases the PAS pump is not needed, some people reposition the alternator where the PAS pump went. I have however seen an installation where the alternator is kept in the standard position and the innards of the PAS pump are removed so that it just acts as an idler to transfer power from the crank pulley to the alternator. An advantage of this setup is that the alternator is higher up and so less likely to suffer damage as a result of wading.

I've mounted my alternator in the lower position using the Glencoyne method, which works by using a standard SIII alternator mounting bracket and some 40mm spacers, I've had no trouble with my setup, but I've heard of several stories of these setups failing after about 10,000 miles causing the alternator to fall off. I plan to weld the three adaptor posts together, then have the faces squared of using a surface grinder.
