I've drained it by removing the plastic sedimenter plug and letting the derv out into a bucket, took days with a full tank, remember to check the bucket occasionally. Might be quicker taking the sed right off?

I'm measuring at right angles to gudgeon pin hole, half way between hole and piston skirt. Somehow it's less than std size, I'm confused!

Sorry I should've mentioned that the cylinder bores are within tolerance for Standard diameter (90.47 to 90.647), it's like a smaller piston from another engine's been used

So I've stripped down the engine of my disco to try and locate an engine noise and steam leak. I've been measuring the tolerances today and found that 3 pistons are 90.37mm in diameter, but piston no1 is 90.05mm in diameter, I have checked and double checked. With the head off, No1 piston could...

Further investigation reveals the cylinder bores have been 're-sleeved and there are exhaust valve imprints on all pistons (after cleaning all the carbon off so must have happened a fair while back. I thought I knew the history of this engine having driven it for 100k of its 230k miles!

Mine's P reg, inside the door cards are stamped Jan 97 and it's manual pump non EDC. But then it doesn't have leather seats or sunroofs. Could it be related to the trim level rather than year of manufacture?

Went to top up gearbox today and found that some Muppet has rounded the inside of the filler plug. I suspect it's been overtightened and rounded with an air tool. Any suggestions for it's removal please?

The saga of the noisy 300 tdi continues, especially after hearing the nice purring sounds made by other 300 tdi discos at the local show at the weekend. I've used the stethoscope to go round the engine, the loudest noise seems to be coming from the injection pump pulley behind the timing cover...

There some M8 bolt holes on the pulley. You make a Y shaped tool out of 2 suitable flat metal bars. It's mentioned in the Haynes manual. You should use it to undo the pulley bolt too.

Had a similar problem, temp gauge would go up to max and go down when handbrake applied. handbrake cable would heat up and smoke. Fitting a new engine to gearbox earth strap fixed it. Check all the earth connections, clean them up with wire brush etc. 2 in engine bay, near battery. Engine...
